I am having problems. Sled will start and kind of run with the choke on half way. It has almost no power. To get it in the garage I had to use full throttle and push. Even when I pulled the belt and started it there is no power just Black smoke and wet plugs. I can put new plugs in and runs great for a few seconds then no power and really bad backfires.
Sled has 1,200 miles looks like new
Thing I have tried
All coils have good spark
Cleaned carbs twice
New stator
Salvage yard cdi
Cleaned and greased all wire connections
Compression is 125 psi. on all cylinders
Dissabled the tors
Are there any known problems with these sleds anything I should check? I had a 1997 vmax 700 sx before this that ran great till 13,000 miles when the bearings blew at wide open and killed the engine. Still got the engine for parts. I bought the 02 two years ago in fall no snow guy said it ran I found out different latter. Paid more than I should have and tired of putting more into it and don't want to pay a shop to fix it. Would like it running so I can sell it. Over the past years everyone I ride with has got rid of their sleds.

Still sounds like carbs to me. Those engines are pretty much bullet proof and your comp sounds good. When you cleaned the carbs did you check each pilot jet so you can see light through it? Did you check to see if cleaner flows through each circuit? Did you check the top hat screens under the needles? How about flot height? How about the reeds? Thinking out loud trying to narrow it down.

Check the needles in the carbs make sure the clips are on i had a sled last year that would not run right and it had a needle that was staying down when you gave it throttle because the clip came off the needle.

I agree carb or bad gas ,choke adjustment.

Have you checked the sparkplug caps? My 97 sx did the same type of thing. Weak spark due to bad caps caused the engine to flood itself.

I wonder if the diaphram in fuel pump is cracked.

Did the sled run OK last year? Did you loop the tors wires back together? I ask if it ran good last year cause maybe you didn't ride because of lack of snow. Maybe the Guy had the sled moded and when he sold it he took the mods off and didn't feel like putting the right jets back in the carbs and its pig rich?

And did you check the Top Hats while in the carbs?stein700sx said:Have you checked the sparkplug caps? My 97 sx did the same type of thing. Weak spark due to bad caps caused the engine to flood itself.

I thought it would be something with the carbs. I will be pulling them apart again today. I will check the reeds and jet size while they are apart. Maybe I missed something the first two times. Also what are the the top hats?

Top hats are the screens under the fuel inlets.

Just cleaned the carbs again and checked reeds all looks fine. Fired it up and now it runs great. Need more snow to try at wide open. Must have moved something I didn't see in the carbs. Thanks for the help. Also it was late and the party store down the road only had B9ES plugs will it hurt to keep running them?

Now thats funny! Hell of a party store though. You can get bread, milk, a case off beer and spark plugs! LOL! Where are you at in mid michigan?
No. The "R" in the plug is just because they put a resistor in the plug.

I am in Mikado. The plugs were kind of dusty I think that I bought all the br plugs over the years. It's my first stop when heading to the trails.

Get them changed out before some hard riding. The electrical system is designed for a 5k ohms resistance plug.nofords said:Also it was late and the party store down the road only had B9ES plugs will it hurt to keep running them?
