Floppy mirrors

Just picked up an '02 Vmax 700. One owner, good shape, great deal! But the mirrors are floppy as hell. When they're pivoted back to put the cover on, they are nice and tight. But when swung into riding position, they are quite loose. Seeing how Yammie wants nearly a benjamin for a new set, I'm hoping someone has a good trick for tightening them up and still keeping the pivot function to get the cover on.

(yup, it came with the spiffy 2010 Triton - basically, the trailer was free :WayCool: )

BTW, I'm not really new here - I drifted over from the 4-stroke side after selling my Apex a couple years ago.

I cant remember but i think you can take them off and tighten the spring they pivot on. My spare set is up north waiting to be mounted but i seem to remember this. I could be way off but worth a look.

On my DX i found out (as we were loading it up when i sold it :( ) that you can twist them clock wise i believe and it will tighten up, they snugged right up and held great, nice thing to figure out before loading onto the new owners trailer.

Don't think we're talking about the same mirrors. These have a sort of split-washer type spring (yellow) in the pivot that I assume is supposed to hold the joint tight when in the normal position.

I got a couple ideas, you could use 100% silicone like the ultra black from permatex, put it on the joint and spin it around, get the mirror set where you want it and let it harden up for a few days before running/riding the sled, it will hold it for you and not be seen as it will be under the boot.

If you want a permanent fix you could do the same with some 2 part epoxy but youll not be able to move the mirrors again if you want to, but it will be a stronger fix yet.

pivot function will be impeded with either one unless the silicone will just take up enough space, you could try it and always pull it off when dry, the epoxy wont be so easy to undo....lol
