2001 Vmax 600 triple starts, runs on middle cylinder, and backfires like a beotch! didnt see this happen but i was told the first time it was started fuel was pouring out of the carb overflow tubes and started backfiring. first thing i thought was a stuck float so we pulled the carb and checked and they all worked fine.. jets were all clean as a whistle so we put those back on. started it up and it sounded like it was bogging and ready to backfire. pulled off the two outside cylinders and confirmed it was only running on the 1 middle cylinder. took the coils out and tried testing them... didnt really know how but had about the same ohms the way we tested.. couldnt find a bad one really and put it back together and just tested spark and it sparked on all 3 cylinders
then we were confused... soo we stuck the carbs on half *** withouth the airbox and bolted the coils back up and gave it a pull.... started up fine and ran great on all 3 cylinders.......again we were confused... so we put everything back together cause it ran great.. bolted airbox up and put the can and everything back on..gave it a pull and only ran on 1 cylinder again.... backfired again so shut it off with the kill switch and the key was still on.... its electric start.... one of the relays started clicking like crazy so we pulled it out... tried starting it without the relay it did the same thing but no lights. shut it off and we were giving up... plugged the relay back in and it stopped clicking even with the key on.... wanted to see if it was clicking from not enough voltage or something so i turned the key to start it, barely cranked a degree but BAMMMMMM! backfire out exhaust like the rest. scared the shit outta us and it was 2 in the morning so we gave up. sorry its so long and thanks for reading.... didnt want to leave out any details... what the **** could it be?????? thanks alot for any help its much appreciated!
ps when it was backfiring and only running on one cylinder i tried high and low beam

sounds like a reed problem to me..its gettin too much gas and flooding the motor. happenend to a buddy of mines sled ..started it up and would backfire if he took off rt. away it would run great till he let off the gas then it would backfire and flood out....just somethin you should check!

How was sled stored? Doesnt explain the relay clicking but if theres a mouse/critters nest in that can could be blocking off exhaust......Like a jake brake on the big rigs. I had a artic crap yard beater that wasnt priveledged to indoor storage. I guess it was how it was parked but some how can had filled with water and froze! Was beating my head against wall trying to get it to run for several hours......Noticed water was coming out of the top of can. Pulled the can out let it sit upside down by the wood stove overhight. Next day it fired right up and ran as good as an artic cat could!

so do u just replace the reeds could that fix the problem then? those are the things right after the carbs going to the motor correct? thanks alot!
and hahah nice with the can how the **** does it freeze???! hahaha i dont think that would be the prob though we had the can off and it shot flames through the pipe when it backfired. and i dont think the sled was stored to carefully. probably all old gas and just let sit for summer and probably riden pretty hard.. my guess would be it was stored in a shed all winter and probably covered up... thanks for the help!
ive heard there was a wiring harness short problem with the 2001 when the new style came out... could that be the problem if it isnt getting spark?

They running fine when "half a$$" put back together does suggest a wire could be shorting somewhere. Bumped it (not shorting) when you tore it apart...ran fine then bumped it again (now shorting) when putting it back together.

ohh ahha nah i mean we just ran it without the box on and no throttle or choke cables hooked up. the plug wires and coils were all hooked up the right way.. but thats what i was thinking too that something was shorting and got bumped when the airbox was put in..... he ordered the reeds they should be there on tuesday and i"ll let you know what happens... otherwise we'll probably rip it all apart again and look for a short or bad wire somewhere... otherwise plan B hes gonna trade it on a turboed 09 apex
