V-Max 500/600 ( 1995-1997 ) Optimize gearing and clutches... ?

I'm looking to optimize the gearing and clutching on V-Max 500/600 ( 1995 - 1997 )

Please tell me about your experiences.

What works and what does not work ?

My current set up:
Gearing: 18/33
Gear ratio: 1,833

Drive sprockets: 9-teeth
Pitch: 2,52"
Track: 136"x15"x1.25"

1995 Vmax 500LE, 121" stock track
Had to replace gears 1st season under warranty due to dealer overtightening and damaging the chain/gears, so I asked for 600 gearing in an effort to get better fuel mileage on our long trips. Couldn't tell enough of a difference other than it being more of a pooch so I decided to go the other way with the gearing. I also replaced the 89L belt with a softer 87X (Phazer etc) belt. What a difference, the sled would hang with 600's for awhile and there wasn't enough of an overrev or fuel hit to worry about it, just wore out the softer belt faster. My Vmax4 bud and I would swap sleds every now and then, and when he rode mine after the changes (without knowing I made any changes), he was blown away, asking what did I do to soup up the sled because it was so much quicker than before. He had a hard time believing the two simple changes made so much difference.
Sled was still relatively new and low miles so the clutches were in good shape and I left them stock.

Stock gearing: 39/21
600 gearing: 37/21
The more fun gearing: 39/20 or 19 I can't remember it's been too long, but I think 20.

The more fun gearing: 20/39 or 19/39
