Speedo Problems

well i am new to snowmobiles but an ok mech. i am trying to put a new speedo thimbel ( not sure if thats the right name) but it's the little housing inside of the shaft that the little cable spins the actual speedo assembly. any ideas on how to get the old one out ive tried a drill bit and pb blaster its just a super rusty housing.. thanks for any tips

Welcome to the site. Sounds like your talking about the keyway/pin dealy goes between axle and speedo cable. Designed to break when your axle bearings are bad? Not to familar with the phazer, maybe try gently heating it up with a propane type torch (like plumbers use) If you try actual cutting torches I would be very careful not to heat it up to much. Might get a better response posted in "vintage"or "all other yamaha sleds" categorys.

If you are trying to take the insert out of the dribe shaft that the key fits into then your best bet is to take the drive shaft out and have a machine shop get it out. Saves a lot of time and four letter words on your part. If it is just the key, then you can drill it out easily enough.

Here Is What I Do To Remove Them I Have A Gm Steering Column Tilt Pin Remover .........i Dill And Tap The Hole To The Right Size (don't Remeber Right As This Time) Instull The Puller Give A Little Heat With A Heat Gun And Pull It Right Out They Have To Be Pulled And Not Drilled As They Are Not Round Look At The New Drive Insert And You Will See .....i Will Get Some Pics Up Tomorrow Of The Tool

Do a search. I ran into this a couple years back. I started out with a small drill bit worked my way up in size and it spun out of the shaft on the drill bit.

***grinding clutch noise hard to pull start***

thank you everyone so much for you help i was able to drill out the key and put a new one in and also replaced my v belt for my primary and secondary clutch. so i put about 50 miles on it since then and i was riding out in the back of my house when i heard a horrible squeeling noise ( had my head phones in and still heard it) i secured it immediately. when i check my new belt praying i didnt just go through a 50 dollar belt it was fine. i went to start it back up but the pull cord was really heard to pull i muscled it through and i heard a weird grinding noise. with further investigation i manually put my hadns on the primary clutch and turned it. i heard a grinding noise metal on metal there were also light metal shavings under the primary clutch with these two sympthoms. does anyone know how deep im in? its an 86 phazer would it be cheaper to fix the problem or am i better off just starting over with another sled?

is that the portion of the tunnel where the bearing and speedo cover should be? hard to tell from the picture.

did you miss the part about the key breaking can sometimes be associated with a failing bearing? second post i believe.

if thats what i think it is, you have a few options. new tunnel, find an old tunnel and section out that piece and weld it into yours, find someone to cut a section out for you, or find a parts sled and swap your stuff over.

amazing how a neglected $20 part, after being forwarned, can ruin an otherwise good sled.

not that i am leading you in that direction, but i do have a few phazer tunnels laying around awaiting transfer to the local scrapyard.

thats the pic of the key i just put in and i already replaced the shaft bearing .. i was just showing my progress.. i picked this sled up in sept and its just been a little project sled for me so far so good other than the clutch problem im having now.
