I was out today for a while, I noticed my sled was reving fairly high today. What I know of the clutching is this. I have w-p-w primary spring, 8ab weights with a rivet in the last hole, don't know the rivet weight, was in when I bought it. Secondary is wrapped at 60 degrees with a black spring, helix has a 8bv and 48 43 stamped on it. From a 25MPH roll, RPMs would start at 8400ish and steadily climb to 9100-9200ish. This would happen in the course of 3-4 seconds.
Have silencer mod, reed spacers, 142.5 mains are only mods. Belt isn't the newest, I do have a new spare, but figured a belt isn't going to solve it. Wondering if changing my secondary wrap might tame it down a bit.
Sorry for being long winded, any help appreciated. Sled ran like a raped ape other than RPMs seemed high. First time out in two years(no snow last year).

Thanks

You could take out some twist on the spring just so you know you will lose some backshift. You could also add more weight to the clutch weights in the tip or last hole. Just some guidelines but I did not look up the specs on your springs. Your finish helix angle is not loading the motor hard enough so add some tip weight.

THIS SLED IS OVER REVING BAD. SECONDARY TWIST IS NOT THE ANSWER. NEED MORE TIP WEIGHT. 8AB ARE GREAT WEIGHTS BUT THEIR LITE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Maybe a dumb question but are clutches CLEAN? If it hasnt ben out for 2 years and was fine before entirely possible they are just DIRTY. Belt cant bite/be bitten by crusty/oxidizing helix's.

Thanks for the replies, I'll clean the clutches again and also pull a weight out and weigh it to see what rivet is in it. I believe 8ab weights should weigh about 41 grams empty, I think? Once I do that, I can see what you guys think I should put in it for increased weight. If I remember correctly, it always seemed to run a bit high RPM wise, but not 91-9200, it was more like 86-8800, somewhere in there. It seemed to run good in the past, so I never messed with it.
On a side note, I'm wondering if since 2 years ago, I added the reed spacers, and also jetted down from stock jets, if the increase in HP could cause even more pronounced over rev...
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help.

Absolutley! With each upgrade in horsepower you have to follow suit with putting it to the ground.

Pulled it into the garage, gonna work on it for a while tonight.

Thanks for all the help so far, this site is the best!

Well I got a weight out, best I can tell is it weighs 43-44 grams. Scale goes in 5 gram increments, was jumping between 40-45 a couple of times, the other times it stayed on 45. I'm guessing the weights gotta be right about my guestimate. I'm thinking it has a 2.4 in the tip, for a total weight of 43.4 per arm. There is an empty hole right above, should I put a rivet in those?
If so, what kinda rivet should I be looking for, provided the reclean of clutches doesn't solve anything?

Thanks again for the feedback.

You could use a nut, bolt, washers, change out rivets, buy weights from ebay that weigh more. Seems you need a 2 to 3 grams more per weight. Are the bushings good in weights and rollers? cheers

Brand new rollers 35 miles ago, weights have no slop and pivot smoothly. Ran out of time tonight, gonna try to take it out tomorrow after work, see if there is any change.
I cleaned the S*&^ outta the clutches, put a new belt on. We'll see tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!

I have an 03 VMax, all stock, with a similar issue. I've assumed that the brake is not fully releasing. Took the caliper off, cleaned and lubed moving parts, but does not seem to completely disengage. I'll clean the clutch and check weights. Thanks

Took it out for about 30 miles, still overrevs, but not as bad, runs up to 8900-9000. I'm going to add 2 grams into the middle hole and see if that helps, I'll let you guys what happens once I've done it.
Thanks for all the help.

Good news! I added a small 10mm bolt and nut, just enough length to screw it on a full nut with loctite, went through the upper hole, did the trick. Rpms start out about 8000-8100 and steady climb over 2-3 seconds to 8400-8500. Boy, it's like night and day! Sled actually seems to be working instead of just making a bunch of noise, kinda like it's actually under a load now. It pulled decent before I thought, but now it really tugs hard, WOW, the difference is amazing, still got a smile on my face!
Thanks for all the help! This website and you guys are AWESOME!
