most carbs dont even have them. I personally see no problem with eliminating them. Others feel if yamaha put them there you should leave them there. Either way will work fine IMO

Or is it better to just clean them?
I have been removing these "Top Hat Filters"from my Yamaha flatslide sleds since I first discovered them in 1995 on my 95 VMAX4.
I don't like the fact they could glaze over from either old stagnant fuel or water in fuel and lean the cylinder out.
I have removed them from 2 VMAX4s, 2 SXs, and my 2002 SRX with 1000s + 1000s of miles between them with no related issues.
There is already a fuel filter in Yamaha's fuel tanks so I see no need for them.

I never got around to those carbs today. Mainly because I couldn't get a thing in this place to help me finish pulling the rest of the engine. ( I.e. a primary puller ) I HATE living this north. Everything is a week to get.
I took the old Polaris 500 trail for a drive since its the only thing I have that runs. Slow as hell but at least I was riding

Do they have a hardware store that far north? If YES you can wait the week OR get a bolt with corresponding threads inside your primary(not the threads in the crank, the larger threads in the primary). These are the threads the clutch puller would use. From here you have 2 options A roll sled onto right hand side so hole is straight up, fill with H2O or B Grab a tube of your favorite axle grease, pack the hole full of grease. Start threading bolt into primary (some guys use teflon plumbers tape) As you thread bolt in it compresses the grease into end of crank then pushes primary off. WARNING Makes a mess! This is the approved method for getting stubborn primarys off when the puller your waiting on wont work!

Well I got my sled running last night. I hope I have some good luck now.
I have a tempa flow installed, when I bought it but its not installed correct or what I've seen here on the site. I think I'm going to just remove it.
I want to THANK everyone for their help. I'll post a pic once I have it out for a ride.
