sorry this is my first post . i have a 1997 vmax 700 sx and im trying to put the bigger srx gauges on it i have everything plugged in but tach only works for a second then quits has antone tried this sucessfully is there somthing im not doing or maybe stators wired differently.any help appreciated.thank you

what year srx tach is it, youd need a 98-99 tach only, the 2000-02 are differnt because of the 3d ign. system

my sled is a 1997 gauges are from a 2000 venture

ya and a 2000 venture is still the 175 watt ign system, the same as a 98-99 srx is, its the srx i am talking about, a 2000-02 srx has a differnt tach then the 98-99 has for the 300 watt dual bulb headlight models with the 3d ignition. it wont work its a differnt pulse.. :o|

add:, it should work then if its from the single bulb headlight model, post the part number on the tach lets see, because if its a 2001 it wont work, again, the dual bulb ones wont work. sure sounds like you have the incorrect one. Did you actually remove the tach from the sled or buy it from someone who was advertising it as such?

was the venture a tripple or twin? they are different.
also, did you make sure the wires are in the correct slots in the harness. when converting an older sled to big gauges, there is something different about one of the wires. under gauges, there are a couple that split. if you have the hood harness for it, they split for you but as I remember(been a while) there is a wire that is located differently in the hood harness plug where it plugs into the main harness.

good memeory Scott, I forgot they made the 500 venture back then. that could definitly be the problem also.

in an effort to refresh my memory, I looked at a couple harnesses. I was correct on the wires at the top. you will need to split the grounds and light wires, blacks and browns.

I was wrong on the hood plug. if you switch hood harnesses, you still need to do some wiring as you have two female plugs to plug into two female plugs. Although that might be interesting to think about in a dark room, they just don't fit.

Make sure all the connections are clean. The tach on my SRX suddenly was operating very intermitently. Turned out the connectors on the tach were green with corrosion. I wire brushed the connectors bright a shiny and the tach has worked fine. Connectors can be a major source of electrical problems.
