Phazer Failure

A bud had his Phazer blow up and he brought it over to tear down. This is the aftermath.

It's all pretty much a write off, but I am curious about the failure point. Crank bearings all are fine, piston was not stuck. The bottom skirt of the piston was all broken out. Piston failure or broken rod? Is that common on Phazer engines?

Had one do something very similar. Hard to say what happened first, but much of the damage is a result of debris from whichever part failed first. I don't feel it is that common because I have seen a number of other Phazers go beyond the 10K mark without failure.

Yup, What Ding said.

Good luck finding parts. Trailing arm Phazer bottoms are different than the rest. Not many out there and not many parts to be had.

I think this one is around 5000kms. I always thought they were pretty solid engines as well. I was seriously considering buying this particular sled if my buddy had passed on it. I guess I'm lucky I didn't.

I was afraid of that. I was looking at the fiche earlier and the replacement case number is the same for all model years, but the original part numbers are different. I also quickly looked at some pictures on ebay and most of those cases seemed to have different mounting points for the magneto. :o|
 
There were some engine durability problems with that era Phazer - Phazer III
but right now can't remember specifics.

I've said the same and been criticized..... just seems for the relative small numbers compared to the T.S.S. era Phazers that I see alot of engine failures ?
 
the phazers had a lean spot in the mid range that there was an update for with the butterfly carbs.

my aunt grenaded 3 phazer II motors almost the same way. now she has a venture motor in there and it is lasting so far. one went that way because the wrist pin seized in the connecting rod and they had to drive it to get it out of the bush.

Is that a 500 phazer? 99 and newer? If so my buddies did the exact same thing on the same side, Broke rod off and upper crankcase. :o|
 
From the looks of the pics, it almost seems as though the piston to cylinder clearance was way over it's allowed tolerances, causing the piston to slap - which eventually got through the oil film. Materials between the cylinder wall and the piston started being exchanged... piston is always the one to accept the metal - it grows on the piston skirt - because thats the largest part of the piston... once it grows too much, the piston seizes at or around TDC, meanwhile the crank is still going a mile a minute....... hence the broken connecting rod... seen it a million times... It could also be the crank seal on that side was on it's way out, and that piston ran so lean it heated up like a hot coal, expanded way beyond the cylinder walls and disintegrated.

Yup, it's a 99. The rod punched through the top and bottom cases. It even hit and bent the flange on the y pipe. :o|

That's interesting. I will have a closer look at the pot. The sled only has 3500Kms on it.
 
Back in 92 i was a mechanic at the local yamaha dealer and we seen only 2 of them back then brake the rod like that, both on new sleds one just happen to happen when i was test riding it after i just did a 500 mile service on it ,I was a mile a way from the shop and i drove it back to the shop on one cylinder we all couldnt believe it would still run, the owner of the sled got a brand new motor of course yamaha's warranty back then was 2nd to none.
