My dad and I have been trying to get my brother's sled running for him and are having one hell of a time. There have been a number of issues that we've correct but we still can't get it going. The sled stopped running 2 years ago and has been sitting ever since.
1) The body ground and engine ground were both bad so we pulled them off, sanded down all of the surfaces and reconnected them. They are now working great as far as we can tell.
2) Once the ground was fixed, we still weren't getting power correctly so we checked the main relay and found the wire was broken. We fixed the wire with a brand new connector and some solder and that fixed the power issue.
3) Once that was fixed, we still had no spark. After testing the pick-up, we found no continuity in the pick-up so we replaced that as well (replaced pick-up with an RM Stator pick-up but maintained the factory stator). With replacing the pick-up we were able to get spark on 2 out of the 3 coils (nothing on the center coil). We already had bought a replacement coil so we threw that in and were finally able to get spark out of all 3 plugs...... sort of..
That brings us to our current state of completely out of ideas... when using the electric start, we get a quick series of solid, strong sparks (appears as just 1 or 2 sparks but I'm assuming they are very quick, multiple sparks) then nothing. The initial spark is great, but after that there is nothing at all from any of the plugs. We then thought maybe the knock sensor was bad and was sending a signal to the CDI to cut spark, but that is testing fine according to the repair manual we have (520k Ohm-ish resistance to body). We tested the stator and have continuity on all 3 white wires. We also compared the voltage output (meter on AC) against my wife's 2000 SRX which is running great (after a full carb cleaning) and the voltage is exactly the same between the 2... both in actual voltage and how quickly it gets there.
So now we are at a complete loss as to what is going on with this sled. Any help is greatly appreciated... we've been going at it for a week straight now.
