How much oil should a Viper burn?

Just ran 50 miles in Northern Wi after topping off oil on 99 SRX and Viper. After just 50 miles, SRX had used about 1/8 of the reservoir and Viper 6/8 or 3/4.

I did install a riser and rerouted the oil cable last year, but my mechanic checked it and should have set it at spec...I will double check..

Just wondering on a 50 mile run what you would expect for oil use..moderate speeds, had kids on the back...
 
I am sorry but I have to point out 6/8 and 3/4 are the exact same. Alot depends on how those 2 sleds were rode and how much gas they each burnt. I believe the general concessus would be something like a quart of oil to a tank of fuel. Even though my srx's get better mileage than the GFs sxr I usually burn more fuel/oil and my odometer is usually 10-15% higher than hers. I do alot of screwing around waiting on her, hill climbi/feild bombing. I would have to agree though no matter what the viper was doing 3/4 of a tank of oil in 50 miles.
 
my clue here is you installed a riser and had to reroute the cable because the riser is too tall. I have seen this many times before pull the cable out of the housing or tug on the cable when the bars are turned to a certain side, and this makes the pump run wide open, so there is exactly where I would look!
 
What Don said, but if the cable is correctly adjusted it may be the pump itself. When the oil pumps do fail they generally go full open. This is safe, unless you fill up gas without filling oil. When full open you will burn a tank of oil with every tank of gas.
 
We can run well over 200 miles before any oil is needed. This is all of our sleds. When you say, 3/4 are you saying 3/4 of a quart or 3/4 of the tank is empty????
 
I just gave the oil usage in 1/8 this of a tank to point out the difference in oil usage over the same mileage at the same time..the Viper used 6x the oil of the SRX.

I am going to check the oil cable gap versus spec...I know I was worried when I reroute the oil cable on the Viper that it was out of spec held open...

My mechanic mentioned but I assumed he set to spec...now wondering why SRX only burned 1/8 of oil reservoir in 50 miles...we rode the same trails, I do pin it more open than her then wait at the next intersection for her to catch up...but can't see that much of a difference due to riding styles.

I was saying burned 3/4 of the reservoir, but I guess to be accurate I should figure out the usage by how much used to refill it...the reservoir is not of uniform cross section obviously...so the "height" can be deceptive...how many quarts does the Srx And Viper reservoir hold?

Sorry I should've read the last forum post.. Couldn't figure out why I'm running through oil like crazy but I've figured it out now
 
You should be around 50-1 gas oil ratio.
About 3 ounces of oil per gallon of gas used. Spec is 21mm I believe. Make sure you set your idle first, then your throttle free play(3mm) then set your oil cable free play.
