1998 SRX 600
It has always been hard to start, but once it is warmed up I can fire it up in one pull. Last year I was showing my sled to sell it. We got it started no problem. We killed it then tried to start it again, then nothing. Obviously there was no sale that day. I didn't have the time to look at it until this week. This is what I did:
I removed and cleaned the carbs. Cleaned YPVS. Drained old gas from the tank and the lines. Checked for spark.
Now there is spark but it seems weak. Not bright.
Priming it would usually give me some sense of it running normal for a few seconds. when I primed it this time, it ran really weak and died right away.
Anther odd thing is that every so often it kicks back when pulling and will backfire sometimes. It never used to do that before. Nearly ripped my elbow out of place. Ow.
It will fire once every 25 pulls or so.
Compression is good.
Checked the fuel line. There is fuel.
Pulled the spark plugs. They look wet.
Any ideas where to go from here?

first thing to do: take a small light, go over and look down on top of the recoil, theres a hole in top and look at the flywheel, is it all rusty?
It has the big triple exhaust mufflers blocking the view. I'll have to them off and have a look tomorrow.

if you just take off the springs to the muffler, you can kinda pull the pipes out and pull them out towards the outside of the sled a bit to peek in there, if its rusty, youll need to remove them of course and then remove recoil and top frame section to get at the rusty flywheel.
Did a little more troubleshooting. I bought new spark plugs and the machine started 4th pull and now runs like a top.
I learned that just because you can see a spark while testing the plug, it doesn't mean it will ignite the fuel.
It's a little embarrassing I didn't figure it out sooner but I'll leave this post up for posterity so someone else might benefit from this situation.

How do you check specs for caps?

Unscrew the caps from the wires. Connect an ohm meter to each side. Good caps read 5k ohms.
