2000 SX 700R timing

2000 SX 700R running horribly / possible timing??

hello,

I just purchased a 2000 SX 700R with 1365 miles on it. It has been in storage for two years and ran horrible. I bought it figuring it just needed a good carb cleaning, but I am starting to think I may have more serious issues. I removed the carbs, cleaned the mains, pilots, slides, bowls, etc. I cleaned and set the air screws at 1 1/2 turns out. New plugs were installed. The sled seems to run different every time I start it. I have been told I may have a broken woodruff key on the flywheel and timing my be all over the place. Does anybody have any suggestion, or have you heard of this? It backfires through the exhaust horribly and idles high. When I durn the idle down, it bogs horribly when I give it the gas.

Woodruff key. I have heard of it happening on other sleds but have never heard of it on a redhead. Maybe your the first? Easiest enough to check. Pull the recoil off and you should see signs of the flywheel chucking back n forth. Sounds more like tors and possible carbs still being dirty. I know you just cleaned them but did you drain or nearlydrain all the old fuel? Any of that old fuel plays hell on carbs.

When you turn the idle down creating the boggy situtation have you tried running it in half choked? If it runs right/better further supports carbs plugged back up.

Thank you for the replies. Turning the choke half on did not make a difference. It was idling about 3k when I started it. I checked to make sure the choke and throttle cables were adjusted correctly and they are. I turned the idle screw down. The idle dropped, but bogged badly when trying to rev it. It is also backfiring loudly through the exhaust.

sounds like either tors or the reeds are bad pull the carbs and reed cage make sure they seat flat!

had a similar problem, I had adjusted the float height incorrectly and mine would bog and backfire so loud it would pop the exhaust off. Took carbs off, re-adjusted floats and runs great now.

I pulled off the recoil and saw no signs of the mag flywheel slipping due to a broken woodruff key. I am going to re-clean the carbs and check the reeds. Does anyone know if I can clean the reeds with carb cleaner?

You're checking to make sure the are sealing flat with the cages and that they are in good shape and not cracked or chunks missing. Check your cages too to make sure they're in good shape along with the gaskets.
