Thanks for the heads up.
I must admit, the Viper, and/or Venom sure are sexy looking machines(except for the instrumentation-I HATE it) but Onalaska is still 3hrs from me, and I'm really not interested in the Venom.
Doubt it'll have enough for me anyway. Doesn't really seem to be a ton of info out there on it. From what I've read, power-wise, I'd probably be better off finding an EX570SX. Same power, and it's lighter. I LOVE Exciters. They're like a dirt bike on the snow.
If I could find a decent EX570SX, I'd get it.
To drive, not collect.
Saw a great one on Craigslist recently. Older guy selling it, and a 91-ish Exciter. Spent just about ALL day yesterday trying to find it again with no luck. Thought it was in southern WI, but could be wrong. I'm almost positive title said something about vintage in it, and doesn't even mention the word Exciter. I know I just kind of stumbled across the ad when I found it.
I'll be damned if I can find it again. Should have bookmarked the ad. The guy wanted nothing for them. I think that there may have been a trailer included in the deal too?
If anyone knows about this, or finds it. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know.
A package like that would be BEYOND perfect to get me back into the sport.
The EX570SX has ALWAYS been on my list. Only drove one once for about a minute at the dealership I worked at. It was a perspective trade-in. First bump I hit about 100yds away from where I started, the rear suspension collapsed, and stayed that way-figured it was best to turn around and come back. Not much of a test drive, but I always wanted one.

surprised you dont like the gauge on the viper, it is SO easy to read, especially at night. and I always did like the 2 trip gauges

I know......
I'm sure it is probably VERY easy to read, but I bet it's VERY distracting in your peripheral vision with the numbers constantly changing.
I just hate digital everything.
Wonder how many people here have a digital watch.....

Well, I currently have 99,00,01 SRX 700's a 98 SRX 600 and a 00 SxR 700(thats the girlfreinds ride) Care to guess what my vote would be? Redhead 700 defiantely less maintance. the 98 600 and 01 700 both bone stock as far as suspension. The 99 SRX 700 has the viper shock/straps in the rear and 00 SRX 700 has pioneer long travel kit front and rear. I LOVE the giddy up of the SRX. For me it came down to basically SRX has the power I need, easier to mod suspension for the creature comfort than to start with a red head and mod it for power. If your intersted in a sled seller shouldnt mind a test drive....go from there. I do 85% of my riding during the daylight so the single/dual headlight aint such a big deal and if you run across a smoking deal on a single bulbed sled theres always the dual bulb conversion.

I honestly never notice it in my peripheral. no more than a needle sweeping. seems to be the right contrast, and the needle for the tach is nice vs digital
So.....the general consensus seems to be to go with a red head for get on and go, no muss, no fuss riding.
How do you guys feel about the 93 EX570SX?
There are still a few of those around.....

cool sled, but it wont ride as well. or even close
and I still say, my viper (u until the crank let go, but that was my fault for storing it poorly) was pull the rope and go for a little over 9k miles

What if there is a different rear skid in it? As in an Xtra-10?
The redhead will be the cheapest, about the same on fuel as a viper, less maintenance than a viper and you wont have to add a rear cooler. If your doing alot of ice running or low snow running a viper will heat up QUICK! (without the srx rear cooler added).
Ive driven all three in the past plus my current sled 97 600 twin, and honestly power wise from a viper to a sxr I could barely notice any difference and I found the SXR handled better on the trails than the viper, vipers in my opinion seem to bite more and it causes ski lift, if your gonna be doing more ditch banging the front suspension on the viper will help.
If you want more power and great handling, forget the viper and get a SRX.

But really other than a few exceptions your shouldnt have any real issues with any Yamaha tripple if you have enough cooling. My dads SRX made it to 18,000kms without ever being opened up before it cracked a jug (stator side) and the sxr was sold with 11,000kms without an issue.

it will help, but still remember it is an old sled, old front suspension will be more narrow etc. the biggest thing I would notice would be the real small gauges, narrow bars and low seat. not saying they arent cool sleds, just remember what it is and dont try and do a direct comparison to a sled a LOT newer and differentGD23RTF2 said:What if there is a different rear skid in it?
