ok im new to this forum so bear with me . My issue is that my 97 sx 700 starts first pull , idles great . TORS is bypassed . carbs good (second set ) on my second set of plugs leads and coils ,woodruff key good . It will rev to around 3500rpm (ish) then start popping and missing .As if tors still thinks its working ! could cdi ,stator or even a faulty heat sensor on top of engine cause this . i seem to be chasing my own tail right now . any info or ideas will be greatly appreciated

reeds look good and seal flat . compression was in the 140 mark on all cylinders

if there is it will be very small as i didnt see anything when i cleans it up and painted it .it seems to do it at the same rpm almost as if it has a restricter on it .But it hasnt of course. If you blip the throttle it sounds great but hold it open and it will pop and bang awefully

really need some input please .
how do you check stator and cdi . i know there is on the web all the readings for all the wires for both , i know because i have seen it .but for the life of me i just cannot find it again . any help :o|

this is the 2nd set . i know they are used and i will check them . If the cdi is bad ,would the engine even run ??

Just had this exact same thing happen to me. Willing to bet your source coil in your stator is bad. Get a ohm meter and test. The specs on what the readings are are in the tech pages of this web site. Just put mine back together last night. easy enough fix. Gonna need a harmonic balancer puller to get flywheel off. other than that pretty straight forward take part off and put new part back on. Do yourself a favor and spend 30 bucks on a repair manual. Get them on ebay and lots of good info in it. If you cant find it there then you will here

carbs clean .fuel pump good. tors is bypassed and both sensors one by the throttle and one on the carbs tested good. this is the second set of leads and coils .like i said they were used but came off a working snowmobile. (tried testing them but to be honest i couldnt work out how to do it as i couldnt get any reading on all six i have ,does the engine need to be running to get juice running through them ?. I feel a bit dumb asking that last bit ).Wiring checked for wearing and grounding and that was good.all that is left is stator and cdi. someone elsehad similar problem on another site and said cdi wasnt advancing timing properly so he changed that and all good.
Engine misses when trying to open throttle and the plugs are moist with fuel. would this point to stator (weak spark) over the cdi ?
if i need stator do any interchange with the 97 sx vmax 700 ( as with the cdi if needed)

much appreciation goes to you all

I have had issues with my 700 breaking up on the top end. I bought a new Kimpex stator and still had the same issue. I was told to try a Yamaha stator and tried a used Yamaha stator and it straightened everything out. Now it runs great.

You need a stator out of a 97 -00 600 triple or 700 triple. Saw some adds here in classified that had some. I lucked out and found one locally. You should really test it first to make sure thats the issue. Sure sounds like the exact same issues i had though. Still test it . Im assuming you have a decent ohm meter. To test your coil put your meter on ohms unplug your coils and put leads on each of the wires. Should be like 5-6 ohms. Then put one lead on one coil wire and take ur plug cap off and check at end of wire. For life of me im having brainfart and cant remember what that is. Is in the tech pages of this site go check it out

ok so i tested my stator.
source coil was 448 ,which is good (within region of error)
pickup coil 203 which is also good (within region of error)
but the third set on the source coil resistor ( brown and brown /red ) i could not get any reading .It should be between 78-94 ohm . if this is bad it would do what to the engine????????????

now on the stator itself the 3 coils that are covered in the waxy stuff .i assume these are the 3 circuits that are tested. one of them is much browner than the rest (the right hand side of the 3). could this the one that gave no reading ??.
got told problem is the reeds but they seem undamaged and still tight and flat the the surface.

sorry for messages being so long but want to give as accurate description as i can

i may as well try testing the CDI box .Anyone have a link or know what the readings are meant to be and instructions ??

i will, but that doesnt answer my stator question .if you have no reading on one of the source coils (the one with the low ohms ,74 to 94 approx) would that cause the misfiring at 3000rpm (approx) and up. ?

yeah this is exactly how my stator read. All was good except that last one that was supposed to read 90ish. Had the same thing a no reading. Thats your problem fella get yourself a stator. Blue loctite everything when you reassemble. Clean that flywheel good.if there is any rust on magnets and spray with wd-40. Make sure inside of flywheel is clean to , no metal filings or anything. Put back together and she will be good to go. Cant tell you why they go but they do. I know major pain in the ***. I had a 97 sx before with 7500 trouble free miles and then blew a crankseal and rebuilt and ran some more with no stator troubles. Guess its just one of those thangs.

ok will try to find a stator. But by looking around they are not very common, but at least i have a direction now in which to fix it .Sled only cost me $250 and i have only put $100 in it so things aren't looking to bad .

Thanks to you all and i will post when i try new stator .
