Aftermarket exciter gasket kits vs. OEM

I was going to post this with my other thread talking about head gaskets, but it would have gotten lenghty. I have used Oem and after market gaskets and found that i have trouble getting the base gaskets to seal on some of the aftermarket kits.
What I noticed is, if you are running the rubber plugs under the exhaust port you will have a better chance of getting a positive seal. The Cometic base gaskets seem to always leak if you do not run the plugs and use yama bond 4 on the sealing surface. My guess is that the paper gets saturated because the water passages are just 1/2'' holes and not cut to the exact shape.
In my expirience it seems the 91-93 Winderosa gasket kits seem to work the best for all years exciters with a little yama bond on the surfaces (besides oem) when running without the plugs. My theory is that because the water passages are cut much better than the cometic they in turn seal better and dont get soaked with coolant.
This makes me wonder why dont the aftermarket companies make a coated metal base gasket like the original?? I ordered a windersoa gasket kit for my ZR700 and they have coated metal base gaskets, why not exciters?
Now my next question. Has anyone ever compared the compressed thickness of the above gaskets? I figured I would share this and see what other people thought or what expiriences they had. Hope we get more snow soon!!!

Ok, so I did some research today and found out Cometic base gaskets are .020 thick. I have a Winderosa kit that I will measure when I get to the shop tomorrow. So all I need is the the thickeness of the OEM gasket if anyone can provide it.
Im going to have some coated metal gaskets made that will be .020 thick. Is anyone else interested in these?? I will make a bunch if there is.
 
Got some gaskets measured up. So far I know Cometic and Winderosa base gaskets are .020''/ .50mm and Winderosa head gaskets are .060"/ 1.40mm. If anyone has a chance can you post the oem base gasket measurements??

I got my custom gaskets in the mail today from cometic. They are indeed a coated metal gasket material. They appear to be the same stock that they make the Vmax 4 multi layer head gaskets out of. As Im looking at them I believe they will work better than what they offer in their kit. To be on the safe side Im going to apply some yamabond 4 to the case and the cylinders because these gaskets may lack a little of the padding properties that the oem gaskets have. I believe these gaskets should seal and stay sealed better than the paper gaskets at half the cost of oem.
Another Idea I had is you could stack these gaskets for a poor mans port job as they are super ridgid and would resist a blow out.
Hopefully I'll be able to finish putting my motor back together and have it back in the sled by the weekend. It all depends because this stupid thing called ''work'' interferes with my wrenching and beer drinking. I'll report back on the testing as soon as I get some miles on.

Don't use the rubber plugs under the exhaust. You want more coolant around the exhaust and the case in that area.

Mods make hp
Hp makes heat
More heat needs more cooling
 
Use stock gaskets. No stacking if you cut your pistons, I wouldn't anyway.

Watch when you mix / stack tips or tricks for mods.

Cut head, OR pull a layer. Not both
Cut piston, or port, or shim base.

Each one can change the other mod you did.

Yes I agree. I like using OEM parts when I can however yamaha parts have gotten ridiculous in the last couple of years.
Yeah, I have only run the plugs on one or two of my sleds before I found out that its a better idea not to.
So my mods on this particular build is ported RPC cylinders, .030 off the head, 2.5 mm off of the intake skirts. Single base gasket. Stock head gasket.
I did build a motor using stock specs with a cut head and 2 base gaskets and It worked pretty well. It was quicker than my buddy' 98 vmax600.
I definately agree it can be a bit dangerous mixing and matching mods. We'll see what happens on this build when we get some snow.
