I just bought a 2001 vmax 500 a month or so ago for $1500, it rode ok and all on the trails, was a little lacking in rear suspension and had alot of bite in the skis causing jerky riding... but other than that i thought it was ok. today, i tipped the sled up on its side to adjust the suspension and found that my track is in very rough shape (one edge is missing almost half its lugs, and many of the remaininf ones are cracked and dry rotted) and my skis are all sorts of chewed up (cracks nicks chips etc). would it be in my best interest to invest the money into getting the sled into tip top shape or should i try selljng it for what i can get and starting over? :o|:o| :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :o| :o|

well, i would hold onto it. buy some ski skins. but if you sell, i would spend the extra$ and get a 6 or 700

i was already looking into converting the sled to a 6 or 700, mechanically it runs flawless... could use some reweighting in the clutch due to high rev issues... are ski skins just covers for thw skis instead of buying new ones?

There are so many used skis and takeoff tracks if you want to stay on a 500. If you want a 6 or 7 then I would sell it without putting more into it.

"jerky" riding commonly refered to as "darting". Search darting to find possible causes and fixes. Scrathes, gouges etc really isnt that big of a deal as long as main shape of ski is still intact. A crappy ole track will compound darting rather than help it. Pick up a good used track and go from there. If your still not happy with it the replaced track will only help with re-sale.

Usually worn out carbides dont bite rather than bite to much. Your skis are plastic right? Might have to go with a generic one size fits all skin. Have you checked ski alingment?

the carbides arent just worn, the wear bars are nearly completely broken off and theyre dented up pretty bad from ditch banging between non-connecting trail systems around here where I ride (becuase I dont have a truck anymore :-/)

and ps... I think I am going to go ahead and invest in fixing this up and giving it to my girlfriend after this season and im gonna probably jump on a newer triple if not a four stroke by next season :-)
