widen SRX front for cornering?

I have been thinking about getting into sleds and have lurking around your site for a while. I am a long time Yamaha dirt bike and quad quy. A few years ago my buddy let me ride his 02 SRX 700. Like all of you, I loved the power. The price for a lower mileage SRX 700 around here seems to be around $2000 - $2500. I want to get 2 of them so I would always have somebody to ride with. The lower prices of used sleds would help me to achieve a pair.

The closest sled trail to me is regularly groomed with lots of twisty's. I am thinking that a SRX would work for me on this trail. I would mainly be doing shorter day trips riding this smooth trail. Wouldn't widening the front skiis help in railing the corners like it does for a quad? I haven't really found any posts about just widening them. I have seen the Pioneer kit which widens and lifts, but I probably wouldn't modify the rear for a while, if ever. Low and wide seems like it would be the ticket.

Any suggestions out there on widening the front and keeping the rear stock? Just wondering, thanks...
 
Welcome to the site. Yes widening helps in corners. Theres 2 ways of lifting sled. easiest is just with spacers/brackets and thats all it does is sit higher of the ground. The more popular lifting with longer travel suspension part gives alot better rider experience. The SRX was more of a "lake racer" stock out of the box and thats why alot of guys mod the suspension. You dont need suspension travel at 120+mph across the lake. I dont know where you at in MI but theres a TON around for less than 2K.

Thanks for the response, I live in Durand, just west of Flint. I see a bunch of 98's around but I thought the more desirable years were 01 and 02. Can you run the pioneer long travel front, giving it a wider stance, without modding the rear?
 
I havent ever tried but seems you should be able to. BETHEVIPER also sells widening kits that arent long traveled. 00 and up are the dual bulb hotter stator. I have all but an 02. the 98-99 you can due the dual bulb conversition if you need better lighting.

I sell extension kits that thread into your existing radius and tie rods, it will widen the sled 2 or 4 inches. If you widen the front 2in and use the existing front shocks, you will at a minimum want to do a bracket flip to get back some height. As you widen the sled, using the same shock mounting points and same shocks, you will decrease the angle of the shock as well as its leverage for holding the sled up.
If you just want wider and the same height and have shocks work same as they did. I can make up some brackets to move your shocks out from the bulkhead the same as the widening kit or if you are any good with a welder, you could do the same.
 
The SRX is considered one of the flattest cornering sleds ever produced, at least by me anyway. Find an early Rev for a test ride and you will see what I mean. If an SRX needs any suspension upgrades its in the rear skid, but if you have flat groomed trails I wouldn't change a thing.
 
If you do end up buying a kit, I recommend dealing with BETHEVIPER I just ordered a pvalve from him and it was quick and painless.

Agree, Srx's corner better than anything new. With proper setup- think go-cart
 
I should also add if I was looking for a used SRX I would look for a 00-02, just for the upgraded ignition and chaincase. That being said, I had a 99 before my 01 and it was a great sled.
 
I have to jump in and say that the SRX corners better than any sled I've ever owned. I have had a 94 Mach 1, 90 Indy 500, 86 Pantera 440, 99 SX 600, and my SRX. I will also say, that the only issue I have ever had was trying to get the lower radius rod bolts out of the bulkhead. There just is NO room to do anything. I have a severely bent lower rod and worn out heim, but I cant change it because I can't get the damn nut off the rod bolt lol

Some arent so bad and others are OMFG PITA! I was taking radious rods off from a 98 srx 600 THAT HAD NO MOTOR/PIPES and was fighting me so fricking bad I was about to give up and just buy a set some one else had already removed. I found it ALOT easier using socket/ratchet on inside and ratchet style wrench on the outside.

Not to hijack but that's what's been keeping me away from the 98 & 99s. I can live without the separate hand/thumb warmer thing, but I'm pretty set on the better headlight. When I worked at the dealership the only option at the time was a higher output light, but that was only a marginal fix.
If there is info here on how to convert, could someone set me up with a link?
98 & 99s are cheap around here. Some with Ohlins fronts. This could be an option for me if it doesn't cost a mint and isn't too pricey.....

It seems I mentioned this on your thread as well but theres basically 2 ways to do this. A. Get dual bulb from the pod up(pod,bulb,windy) splice wires on older harness and run 2 35 watt bulbs. B. Same as above plus stator/flywheel/harness. Pick up coil location has to be mofied. Theres a TON about this feel free to search ad read,read,read!

With the pipes off and a box end wrench on the nut, a good air ratchet with swivel socket on the bolt works well.
