Hey guys,
I am new to snowmobiles and have found alot of great information here!
I purchased my first sled, 97 vmax 600 last year. It had slow initial take off and then would take off screaming. I cleaned the carbs and puchased a new belt and it was still about the same.
This year it started to really slow down. I cleaned the clutches and noticed one of the primary rollers were bad as well as the sheeves were quite worn out. It will hit about 20mph and will not go any faster. It sounds like it has a rev limitor or govenor in it. The RPM will not go any higher than around 5k.
If I lift the track up the clutches work properly and the RPM's will get right up there.
I am looking into a new primary. A guy local has a 99 phazer 500 that needs a new piston and is selling the whole thing for $300. Can anyone tell me if the primary off a 99 phazer 500 would fit a 97 vmax 600?
Thanks alot!!!

Thanks rj21!
It should bolt up just fine but will likely have some different tuning parts inside (spring, weights, roller dia, etc), so it may not perform as well as the original clutch used to when it was in good shape.
Of course, check the Phazer clutch for wear as well, and if all looks good you could try it on your 600. If it doesn't perform well you could swap any good tuning parts from your original clutch over and replace the worn parts. You could also try to find the original tuning specs for both clutches, check the Tech pages here on TY, and/or you could become a VIP member here and request shop manuals for both sleds, which likely have specs in them, plus a lot of other great info that you may want anyway to maintain your purchase.
Check your secondary clutch over closely as well. Are the bushings, spring, and nylon ramp buttons still in good shape? A buddy of mine had an issue similar to yours a few years ago and he found the bushing in the clutch body was worn out. After replacement the sled ran fine.
Also, now is a good time to check your belt for wear, as well as clutch center to center distance and offset distance. Info on all of these topics can be found by searching this site, you can read for hours if not days with all the great info.
