Just finished putting a new track on my sons 97 xtc 500,while I have the skid out I would like to change the oil in the shocks. I found the correct nitrogen pressure and piston height but cannot find anything on how much oil goes back in. I also am looking for the correct amount for the front ski shocks also.
Thanks forany help

Hey,
I'm new to the sled scene, but have been rebuilding dirt bike shocks/forks for the past 7 years. I'm going to service the shocks on my new to me '97 XTC 600 in the near future.
I'm sure you've found that most of the info about rebuilding these things seems to be kept secret, I don't know why that is ? If we help each other out with shared info, it might make it easier for both of us ?
I found this pic to be helpful, the shock on the right is what I'm used to. It's a little different but I guess the idea is the same :
I also found this page with some specs listed
http://www.totallyamaha.com/snowmobiles/aaTECH/Suspension/Shock Rebuilding Specs.htm
What specs did you find ? Would you mind posting them or sending them to me ?
I think that by setting the piston height you'll be left with a certain volume of air space left in the body, my guess is that you fill it with oil & bleed the piston that's on the shock shaft. At this point though, I don't know wether or not the shaft is supposed to be compressed (pushed into the body) or extended as much as possible (without air getting into it) before the seal head is installed.
I'd make the assumption that it should be extended.

I dont understand why you cannot locate rebuild info with all the tech guys that are on here. This will be my first set of sled rebuild shocks, I have a friend who helps with the dirtbike stuff, so I guesss I will experiment wit my kids xtc 500. Will let you know how I do. The shocks on his are of the first version in your picture.
