97 SX 700 Motor Noise Normal or not

Clutch noise and a connecting rod ticking are 2 totally different noises (now I know the difference) here is a pic of my latest project my buddy picked up a super clean 99 polaris 500 last month with 2700 miles on it he went to WI to get it, he put 300 miles on it and bang (last sunday) the problem is some of these sleds sit for a few years and the bottom and top end can get pretty rusty and when its run the crank bearings take a beating.

I would pull it apart and check just to be sure. I thought the same thing with my viper and decided I was gonna pull it apart anyways even after I pulled the clutch and thought the noise was gone. I drove very moderately home less then two miles and never exceeded 6 grand and the center rod came out the crank case. Im just saying better safe then sorry.

for what its worth I haven't rode it, used the other sled last year and rode rental in the UP this weekend.

I might be taking it for a some short rides around the house just to see if I can notice any change, its very odd since it only does it when you let off the throttle at a specific RPM weird feeling when hand turning the clutch back and forth.

Resurrecting this old thread.

I have put about 100 miles on the sled since this thread ended and it seems as though the noise has gotten slightly worst (which came back even after a clutch rebuild).

I just pulled the top off her and attached is a pic of the PTO piston all cylinders look good (can see hatching on all three) PTO seems like she might be a little rich if i am reading the wash right and the two centers are dark all around. This sled has stock jetting i believe with PTO different from Center and MAG.

We are going to spec out the pistons and cylinders this week and test for play when i get a second set of hands.

Well to close the thread i can confirm the issue is indeed the crank. After pulling the engine down all the way we found 2-3 bad bearing with a rattle when spinning. I have heard much worst but thats not exactly good either :).

Now the hunt for a crank and or bottom end to drop in, but thats for another post. Thanks again for all the input and hopefully if someone else reads this later it may help them. I am glad i didn't keep running the sled or i am positive it would have been a catastrophic failure when it went

Just reading this thread again, the thought came to me that with the clutch removed there is no rotating mass to load and unload the crank. This is why the sound goes away with the clutch removed. I see you found a crank bearing issue which is what that points to. Hope you get it fixed up.
