on my 98 vmax 500 can go thru a tank of oil (2.5qt i think) in about 130-150 miles of riding (these are club run trails , so lots of slow down, turn, speed up, peg it, slow down............), this seems excessive to me. does anyone have a rule of thumb for the pump adjustment or what i should be using

We have exactly the same sled "98" XTC 500 Deluxe. My daughter's sled. She does not ride easy. A couple years ago we nearly ran it out of oil on a long ride with the kind of consumption rate you are talking about. I decided this is nuts. No other sled with us burned more than 1/2 that amount. After that I weened it down to about a quart to 10 or 11 gallons. My Viper was burning about a quart to 15 gallons so it seemed like the XTC should be ok at that rate. I am sure you know that due to rate the these little 500s suck fuel you would still be running a fair amount more oil through it than most sleds. By the way my Vipers lack of oil consumption was scaring me, so I did turn it up some. I believe it is important to tie the oil consumption rate to the fuel consumed not miles riden. I am not the formost expert in this field but we have about 800 miles on the XTC in a variety of conditions with no problems. Please welcome anyone elses advice on this. This is just my experience.

It's safe to say that you should be using about a quart of oil per tank of gas. Or at least in that general neighborhood...

My srx uses one full oil tank for 4 tanks of fuel, or 1qt per tank. At your rate thw oil pump may have failed causing it to be full open. Its a failsafe mode. 2.5 qts is insane for only 130 miles.

X2 1 qt per tank of fuel.

These little 500s can get as bad as 6 mpg when going slow like he said they were doing so a safe tank distance may be only 60 to 70 miles depending on conditions.
somtimes when the oil pump fails it goes wide open... just a thought

Well from years on the forum there are other discussion which I pursued the same question. They appear to burn more than newer sleds but not such that they fowl plugs etc. Some of the pump ball were said to wear prematurely. Replacing the pump is necessary if that's the case. Too lean and you'll burn the motor. Well for all my running I've not replace my pump yet.
You can't really compare to other model/years of sled since they'll be different. I was also told to measure fuel used and oil each time and calculate the oil ratio it uses. I would expect it to be above (higher) than 50:1 since it can run leaner depending on throttle position but not lower. This is hard to do unless you fill up at a gas pump to get the fuel accurate.

check the adjustment on the cable should be 19-20 mm on bottom side of adjuster there have been post before about this look them up.this happen to me on my viper and what it was for me the cable pulled out of the adjuster block and caused the cable to act as if it was shortened up = more oil slip cable back into correct position and problem solved
