I've seen some SX700Rs out there that have electric start installed on them, and I am a bit intrigued. From my days at a dealership I remember it was an option, and we had a few kits in stock, but there was never any interest and they sat on the shelf in the parts room where I put them when Yamaha sent them to us.
I also remember putting these kits on the shelf, and remember they were very heavy. I want to say 70 lbs, but I may be wrong.
While I'm not opposed to electric start the older I get not only for the convenience factor, but as a backup if, God forbid the rope ever breaks, but I fear the weight penalty more than anything. Especially considering that a 220 lb passenger is already a fair a load.
If in fact that kit was 70 lbs, how much of that is rotating weight?(I never opened the kits and fondled the ring gear)
What does that do to the ability of the machine to rev, and accelerate?
What does one do for clutching? Do you just treat it as if it was a DLX?
Thoughts?

I've got it on my sled and would never take it out. If you could have it why not. If weight as a concern why a liquid cooled machine? The weight is up front anyway and your butt as is mine is aft. The weight change is a tank of gas and 1/4 tank is very substantial. If you want it get it or rather have it. I cannot see any impact on a sled that slides on a groomed surface at break neck speed on a flat lake and tools around the turns on the trails much slow.
I never understood what the issue was. It certainly is not the weight. You're not lifting this weight and these sleds are heavy enough if suck you're luck if you can move the side to side but never lift that front end in the snow.

The elec start kit consists of the Battery(heavy), a couple of battery mount brackets, the starter(pretty heavy), battery cables, and a couple of relays... oh and last but not least the gear ring that mounts on the clutch.
I installed a kit on my sled and it sure make things nice.

the only weight on the clutch is the ring gear and literally weighs nothing had mine off last week it loosened up on me made a hell of a racket whoever installed it didnt use locktite so i took it apart and used locktite problem solved i would never have a sled w/o electric start especially on those -20degree days i also installed reverse on mine gotta have both in my opinion not that much weight to worry about

The battery is very little. Its not an automotive battery. Its pretty small as is the starter motor. You dinner and booze weighs as much!!!
I'd have E-Start any day and live with the weight. Living with it can be a joy with a lot of sled that are hard to pull start when really cold. Its a no brainer. Get E-Start.
If you're that concerned how is it you want a big heavier >2 cylinder engine. You think they weight the same think. Nope especially the 4 strokes. LOL

Wow.....I'm quite surprised. I didn't expect all the glowing praise for electric start.
I expected everyone scream "LIGHTER IS BETTER!!!" and to call me an idiot for even considering it.
At the very least I expected someone to say that the extra mass on the clutch would make things trickier to clutch, or to clutch it how you would clutch a DLX or something.....Didn't think electric start would be so popular.

You likely won't have to adjust your clutching at all. If your SXR is a 2001 I have an entire kit for you for $250 shipped. Kit includes entire new wiring harness for the sled, starter, ring gear, battery tray, fuses, everything. This kit will only work on a 2001 with the dual heatlight style ignition. This is a plug & play set up. I recently eliminated electric start from a friends sled.....the kit has 1,600 miles on it and is immaculate. Let me kow if interested.

Once you have E-start you never want a sled without it. Same with REVERSE, save the back lugging the rear and then front turning it around. Its progress especially with engine bigger and a lot of cc's of compression to deal with and twice as heavy as there used to be in the 70's and 80's where they got fatter and added real weight.

Thanks for the offer Matt, but I'm looking at one with Electric start, and I was just wondering what you guys thought about the whole thing.
If I pull the trigger, I had thought about trying out Turks clutching.....if I even need it.
Found one of Turks old posts and I was wondering if the ring gear would effect this setup with stock jetting as I am paranoid about crap fuel nowadays.
Straight from the horse's mouth. Circa 2007:
"51/43 helix; change inner 3.6 rivet to 4.5 grams. outer allready is 4.5. Sled is jetted pig rich & he should jet down to 142.5,s & drop needles 1/2."

My mountain max has electric start and reverse. The reverse is great for getting in and out of the truck and when on hard surfaces. You can't beat the electric start if the machine got flooded or all the gas leaked out of the carbs while it was on its side or rolled over to get un stuck. I do wish Yamaha had gotten in on electric reverse like all the other 2 stroke sleds of the time had.

Turks set up will be extremely close. The ring gear isn't going to make a noticable difference. You are over thinking this.
