trying to buy a one owner 98 700 srx and the guy says he knows nothing about a crank recall. was this recall for 98? or maybe limited to certain runs?
should I avoid this unit if the crank issue was never serviced?

Good luck with that. Recall came out in 99-00....13 years ago. Hard to beleive any company would fix a recall issue that far back. What kind of mileage? It seems they were coming apart around 3k, sooner if studded.
got studs don't know how long but 4,200 now.

Your on your own! How much for the sled? I have a 98 myself and its great. Sure I would like an 01 or 02 but fear getting a total pos. I put ohlins on it, viper seat and trailing arms, dual headlights, and it gets lots of looks.

Both the 98's I picked up were CHEAP and high milers so felt better about them. At 4200 with studs seems like it should have had an issue by now (even if studs were just added) Any chance he is pulling your leg on 1 owner? If sled never left dealer until 99+ possible it was fixed prior to sale. You could contact Jeff @ Midwest crank. They did all the recall work back in the day. If you get sled I would follow up on that before it bites you.

You can find an 01 or 02 even in some cases for 2k

Around here you can get an 00-01 with less miles for that kind of money!

it was never a 'recall", recalls are for a safety failure. It was a service bulletin.
But to answer your question, No, its been way too long, they wont warranty a 98 model in 2013.
not all of the cranks moved either, my old 98 still has its original crank in it and never had to be serviced, its got over 8000 miles on it. just put a dial indicator on the crank snout, with the clutch removed you should have less then .005-6" run out. They serviced them when they were above this.

I DON,T KNOW IF THE PEOPLE AT YAMAHA NOW EVEN KNOW WHAT A SRX IS. although they made a 120 srx. DON,S DEAD RIGHT, THIS WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN IN 98, NOT A RECALL. 3:16 (yammie tony)
ya I see a ton in the Chicago, South Bend, Detroit CL

Yea because the dealer fixed a rub through harness under the motor but pinched an oil line. So the previous owner got a whole new engine from the deal I guess, he made sure it was ALL destroyed.

When I bought my 98 a few years ago, I actually called Yamaha directly, I don't remember who I had to talk to, but I ended up getting the month, year, and dealer who serviced the crank. I had my srx in 2009-2010, if I remember correctly, the crank work was done in 12/99 at a dealer an hour away.
yep, most are whooped, grandmothers don't buy these to get groceries.

I paid $1600 3 years ago for mine but in all honesty it all depends on the condition. If I were to sell mine today it would be for $2500. Whats the point in getting a 1,500 sled that you end up putting another grand into it. I see alot of JUNK on craigslist, most are basket cases for top $$$. Some people dont mind paying the extra if they dont have to F**k with it and the sled shows.
