93 Exciter II LE two up
She is a bear to steer
Still has steel skis on it
Wondering which way to adjust the limiter straps to help it?

-T.S.S. Maintenance
On most every used T.S.S. sled I've bought the Knuckles and steel bushing are frozen and completely locked up and pivoting on the bolts ! I've bought sleds that the locked up joints won't even allow the springs to return let, alone the struts to work when hitting a bump. The T.S.S sleds have always gotten a bad rap for slop developing when the ungreased steel bushing's freeze up they grind away on the nylon washers ! I have sleds that are 15+ years old that have never had a bushing kit and are almost as tight as new. Just take the knuckles and the ski mounts apart every other year and grease !

Thanks I will look at that
So don't worry about the limiter straps ?

Hard to steer hey?? I have had a few exciters like that. With a little bit of work these sleds can be alot of fun to ride.
First, I would set the rear shock as soft as you can without constantly bottoming. If it is still hard to steer, then I would move to the front shock and stiffen it up until your happy with the effort it takes to steer.
After you have made these adjustments and find that the skiis get too light with even a little accelleration, then you will have to shorten the front limiter strap.
It may take some trial and error but this should get you in the ball park. On most every exicter I have ever owned the suspension is usually on the highest setting for some reason. I am 180 lbs and usually have to have the rear pretty soft.
Basically what you are trying to accomplish is taking weight off the skiis.
Hope This helps

Thanks for the great info
The shocks are likely tired
They are both adjusted to the max
I wonder if one of my spare SRX shocks would fit?

No, your srx shocks wont work. Is it possible to soften up the rear without bottoming?? Check your limiter straps also. If the front one is taught losen it up a bit. Or try tightening up the rear limiter strap if the front has plenty of play.
On my 90 exciter I had similar issues. I rebuilt the entire skid with all new shocks, bushings etc. Not only did it still steer hard, it darted like crazy. Although it is an entirely different skid, the principles are the same. What I ended up doing is drilling new holes 1'' lower in the tunnel for the front skid mount. This took pressure off the skis and made a hell of an improvement in handling. Now I actually have some adjustment in the front springs instead of being maxxed out and it goes straight down the trail to boot.
There is a fine line you need to straddle with making the front end lighter. Obviously heavy front = heavy steering. Too little weight up front and it wont steer at all. You'll have to find a balance that suits you. But everything will change if you add a passenger.
good luck.
