Deere guy needs some help

I have been riding for a couple of years. Started out on a 78 cyclone and advanced to an 83 liquifire - both restored to new like condition. About a month ago I got to ride a 2002 SRX. That was ok. Just kidding. I fell in love with it.

With that being said, I have an opportunity to buy an 01 SRX 700 (2300 miles) for $2000. Track is about a year old and a dealer installed studs. Has new carbides. The SRX looks In good shape - no damage anywhere that I could see. It also comes with an SRX cover that looks like its never seen the sun or dirt.

The sled started on the second pull and sounded good.

Is this a good deal? Anything I should be cautious of? What kind of red flag items should I look for?

Appreciate any help you guys could give me.

thats a fair price for a cleaner than average srx. you can find them cheaper but you'd likely have more than 2k in them by the time you get them up to snuff.
need to clean carbs before every season spotlessly on these
powervalves need cleaning and adjusting, checked for pull throughs
w arms (front arm in the rear suspension) are known for cracking or breaking
harness rub throughs are common in a few spots.

those are a few of the things to look out for. other than that when you go to buy just look at the general condition of the sled just like any other sled. all the above things you can find more info on by doing a search here. and take some time to check out the ty tech link in the toolbar. tons of great info and how to-s in there

PLUS if you have issues down the road there are people here who can help out with complicated fixes like pull throughs on the power valves... Just a FYI. Welcome aboard _ to the BEST snowmobile site on the planet - NO KIDDING!
 
2001 Yamaha SRX bought and brought home and getting ready to head to Michigan tomorrow. I bought it for $1450. I will have to get into it a little bit more. Found out that it had a new driven clutch and it might also have a new drive clutch (need to research). It also has new plug wires. I will dig into it more after I get it home from Michigan. The track is new and studded and has about 10 miles on it. Only blemish that I saw was a crack on the hood by one of the vents (the decal by it is a little spider web cracked). Looks like he must of caught a branch or someone sat on it. Who knows.

I test rode (thanks to the march blizzard Indiana received Tuesday) it today and it has quite a bit of pep. The sled has sat most of the Summer to Winter with a full tank of gas. I am thinking that it has some bad gas and the carbs need a good cleaning. Thoughts on dry gas or stabilizer? It would not sit and idle without the choke half way out. How long does it usually take these sleds to warm up?

Anyways, I am now a proud member of the Yamaha family! I will never get rid of my 83 Liquifire - too many vintage rides and I have wayyyy too much invested in her (monetarily and emotionally).

Appreciate any feedback you want to give, please treat me as a newbie, because I want to know all I need to know.

I would say drain the bad gas and clean the carbs before you go! It could save you a lot of trouble.
 
sweet sled looks real clean, when your ride is done report back because i wanna know how bad your cheeks feel from supporting your huge cheese grin your gonna have on your first yamaha powered trail ride!!! :yam:
 
Clean the carbs before you ride or it may be a REAL EXPENSIVE first time out. Todays fuel is absolutely horrible, it not like the fuel of 5or so years ago.
 
it won't idle well because you have old gas in there and the carbs are most probably gummed up inside.Drain the old gas,add some new and maybe drain it again..Maybe check the in line filter in the tank if it is coated with crap.Usually guys will drain the tank,but always some old gas still in there.Guys will clean the carbs..add new gas..then the pilots plug up again because pump still forced old gas thru..
Go to clean them little hat screens where the fuel inlets are also.
 
Looks like you got a hold of a pretty well taken care of machine. X# on drain that old gas out otherwise you will be cleaning carbs almost every time you start it up! Fresh gas and some carb cleaning and run some marine stable and or good fuel system cleaner( Sea foam). You may also want to flush that tank a couple times as too get that crap out. 3 years ago I had to do the same thing, took complete drain of the tank and then 3 more cleanings of the carbs to get all that crap out of the system. You may want to consider an extra inline fuel filter to catch the crap. ( napa sells ones I have used). Good luck it will be worth it, You will love that machine once that old fuel is gone!

I took her up to St. Helens, Michigan this weekend. Talked to the last owner and he said he added fuel to her early in the season, but didn't ride more than ten miles. I added some stabilizer and cleaner (US 27 Motorsports mechanic recommended) and more fuel. Slapped on some new spark plugs too. The sled had a little issue with idling and initial take off - had to ease into the throttle a little bit. With that being said - the sled ran perfectly for the hundred mile ride. I had no problem keeping up with my buddy on his Apex through the trails. The sled needs some tweaking on the suspension - it feels like its light in the front and makes it a little harder to turn.

The aftermarket can that was installed is very loud (really too loud for me - almost thought about ear plugs after 50 miles). What does this can do for me besides make the sled sound mean?

I have added some pictures of the clutch. Can someone tell me what I have and what it does for the sled?

I am done riding for the year (wife's orders and mother nature's too). I have it set up with my friends mechanic (Yamaha) to get the whole sled ran through, inspected and fuel system cleaned. Handle bar heaters need fixed or replaced too. I am also having the suspension set up for me.

I was truly amazed on how the sled ran and the power that it had. I think the smile is still on my face!

That looks like a Bender silencer[silent it isn't]. The Bender cans save a bunch of weight but thats about it. Most will agree, that for the best combination of performance and speed the stock Yamaha silencer is the best and it won't destroy your hearing so quickly!

You have stock Yamaha clutches with a bender helix and probably a clutch kit...springs ect,,,and it looks like you are shifting out well, as you can see the belt has been reaching to about 1/4" from the top of the sheave...full shift for Yamaha primary clutches.

I would not be surprised if you have the Bender Cold Air Kit as well as that was all part of the Power Up package from Bender...maybe you are even fortunate enough that the P.O had it ported to.

I could cry! A sled like that with that low of miles and a good track would go for $3500 where I live
Ill give you $3000 for it right now! Lol seriously

I bought my 01 srx 700 with hauck clutch kit/hauck growlers and BRAND SPANKING new camoplast track for $1100! Its not quite as clean as this one but pretty close! Wasnt enough snow left to take it out last year but have had her out a few times this year :sled1: :sled1: :sled1: ;)!
 
I would guess you have a hauck helix with 8bu10 weights. but that's just a guess based on the spring colors. I bought a 2000 srx with that exact spring bu10s and a hauck K helix. I assumed it was all part of a hauck clutch kit.
