What do you guys think of 95 VMax 600 - I bought it!
What do you guys think of 95 VMax 600. Good for a first venture into Yamaha sleds? Currenly own 95 Ski Doo Formula Z 583 and 99 Ski Doo MXZ 600 and looking to pick up 3rd sled.

Have owned more than a few. I am a HUGE fan of the tripple myself. As it happens the last one I owned was a 95 600 vmax le (le=electric start) Always ran great, handled good and was as reliable as a swiss watch. Side panels open right up for full on access when you do need to do maintance/change belt or what ever. My only complaint would be the rather low ride in the rear (drop bracket ) and the what I would call a brickish ride, drop bracket only make the brickish ride higher.

I have a 95 vmax 600 for sale. it has a little over 5200 miles. just put on 150 miles the last time i went riding no problems at all, this sled is very good to me. got camplast skis, xtra 10 rear skid 3" bar riser, and a comet clutch. It does need a new seat cover i found 1 at a swap meet 2 years ago but now it has torn along the rear seam again.

Id atleast get into the trailing arm models. The tss turns like a tank and rides like a basketball being dribbled down the court. IMHO itll suck compared to those skidoos.

I've got a 95 600 twin. Good extra sled to have around but like others said, it rides low, like your sitting on a couch.

Agreed. You would be much happier just moving up a couple years. Those old VMax's look cool and are fun if you're just bombing around the house or field, but the ride is not something you would like all day. I think they have 4" of travel. Plus the newer triples get better mileage.

actually we had one here years back..that little 600 would pull really good.It actually gave my SXR600 a handfull when we raced side by side..I was astonished!!
My twin pulls like a train, mind you it is a SX chassis sled (trailing arm chassis), but if its just an extra sled, it will be reliable and cheap to maintain. Also I believe the engine in my 97 and the ones in the 95's were very similar, I run on average 50/50 trail and lake riding and average between 8-11mpg, which I dont think is too bad, and Im heavy on the throttle. I also calculate oil consumption after every long haul and I average right on 50:1.
IMHO the engine in this thing youll love, this has been THE most reliable sled Ive ever owned. It wont handle like the Doo's, but I dont think the rear suspension in the old formulas was that great either.

I have a 96 600xt as a spare, and it's great for what it is. It's heavy and low, the rear suspension sucks compared to anything newer. But it will get to the high 90s easily. And it's reliable, starts on the 1st or 2nd pull no matter what. Next year, if I can talk my wife into keeping it, I'll look for a different rear suspension, they are easy upgrades. I put a set of RX1 plastic skis on it this year, also easy to do.

Sledinear you may have to adjust or set up the rear suspension... When I had one years ago the dealer sold me the sled and basically said "here you go", I asked about setting up the suspension they said "its all done", so I don't think mine was set right from the get go. When I stepped on the machine you could feel the suspension sag(and I was only about 225 lbs in gear at the time), I tightened up the suspension to about 2 - 2 1/2" of set in and it was a whole different sled after that. maybe that will help you out...sleddineinar said:I have a 96 600xt as a spare, and it's great for what it is. On most every used T.S.S. sled I've bought the Knuckles and steel bushing are frozen and completely locked up and pivoting on the bolts ! I've bought sleds that the locked up joints won't even allow the springs to return let, alone the struts to work when hitting a bump. The T.S.S sleds have always gotten a bad rap for slop developing when the ungreased steel bushing's freeze up they grind away on the nylon washers ! I have sleds that are 15+ years old that have never had a bushing kit and are almost as tight as new. Just take the knuckles and the ski mounts apart every other year and grease !

I had a new 96 XT and have had 3 other new Yamaha's since and have never heard anyone say that about the suspension on an XT ? The rear is still sought after for upgrades on sleds.

Pretty much what everyone else said. We have one for backup, we call it the tank. It is a great sled to park in the corner and start when you need and stick back in the corner. Plastic skies are a must. If steering is stiff, check sway bar linkage. Just found that out this year after taking the steering apart and greasing with no difference.

I also put grease zerts on all the knuckles on the front. Compared to Yamaha sleds of that era, I supposed the rear in the xt was a step up, but I think the shocks are overly soft. I have adjusted the rear shock, by tightening it up about 1.5 to 2" and It still seems soft, it bottoms very easily, imho. I'm 240 w/o my riding gear on... Not saying it can't be adjusted more, I'll try to tighten it up more when I ride it next week, (it's at the cabin). But I do think they look really cool. For what's it's worth, I'm very happy with it. I paid $500 for it, spent $120 bucks on some plastic skis and carbides. How can you not like that?

Cant touch an XT around here for under $800-$1000 that runs and has a TON of miles on it...

Springs can only be adjusted a certain distance beyond that it really make a suspension harsh. A higher rate spring will keep your suspension working.

Don't feel bad. Around here it's worse. Some people are even advertising them as "rare sleds" sitting right along side the other half dozen that are in the classified section.
Currently there are 5 96-600XTs and 2 96-500XTs for sale on my local CL starting at $800 and going to $1250. The 2 most expensive ones are the 500's.
I just don't get it. All are pretty low mileage, or rebuilt, and have finally dropped to what they are now. All winter it was much more offensive.
What's worse are the SX500R's around here. People are still REAL proud of those!!!

Oh by the way, it has less than 3000 miles on it. Mine's on CL for $1200... only because the wife insisted I list it.

SXR's are good sleds, bullet proof and hold their value. They are reliable and people know it.I remember when the SXR's came out, they were the sled of the year..For a sled with little maintenance required,no PV's to worry about..just turn key and ride..they are awesome sleds. And the motors are probably the best Yamaha ever built. That is why you see them with 20,000 plus miles on original motors. What other brand can top that.

The XT is FAR better than the regular 94-96 vmaxes, still not as good IMO as 97+ pro action. Theres usually more than few on C listaround here, MOST are overpriced (it is only an asking price) I hear ya on the weird sx500r pricing, around here you dont see many for sale and when you do they are often more than you can buy a similar 6/700 tripple for. The same goes for the pro action 500 phazer that I have heard has little differant version of the 500twin that isnt as reliable as the others.
