Had a meltdown today!

I started some testing today, brought the coil pack home. The coils ohm out perfect, all three coils 6.4ohm ish each. .5ohm each on 2 small wires, i know speck is up to .48 but i dont think my meter takes the decimal out that far and rounds up? Sound right? But when i ohm out the plug caps 2 are fine at 5 and the other one ohms out at 0. With a bit of wiggling and moving leads around i get 10 on occasion. Could this be a short im looking for? Im thinking not but either way ill replace all three caps. Sled ran great as far as i could tell but this could have been a problem i just havent picked up on also?? Any thoughts??

Any luck Chris?

Well the sleds up north and will get the harness tore out and gone through Next weekend. I will fix what is bad and go from there. I did get a new coil harness and got that back together. I was suprised to find even on a different set of coils and harness i picked up that out of 6 plug caps, 4 were bad or out of spec. I changed all three plug caps for new, and ohm'd out the coils and they were in spec. So at this point im hoping i had a rub through. Ill let ya know what i find on the harness when i get it out and go through it. Its got to be simple as everything worked fine on the hour ride home post initial melt down and trailside fix. With a little luck ill be riding for easter!!

Found the cause. The power wire running to the HID's rubbed through and was arc'd/welded to the frame where i had it mounted to with zip ties. I never wire loomed the wire. So this caused the power to back feed to the engine ground then melting up into my harness and shutting me down. Got the power wire for HID fixed and wire loom on and nicely rerouted. The rest i will fix tomorrow after a short trip to the HD. I forgot my wire kit that has all my goodies in it. Then ill tape up the harness and fire it up and hope its all good. Ill let ya know how that turns out but i think i got it fixed. Here it the pic of the power wire i had to pry off the frame. WOW nice one by me, my fault got lazy! Never again. Now to wire loom the wifes before this happens to her.

That would be a dead short. Kinda funny names that electricians use I suppose.

How did we do? Put 144 more miles today....think I am gonna be sore in the morning! Most of it off trail snow cross style.

I seem to be good to go!!. Spliced in the new wires and connections i needed from the harness JD sent me. Everything was soldered shrink wraped and taped. Then i wire loomed the the harness and the power wire to the HID's. Fired it up and money!!!! Everything seemed to work fine. Diagnostics checked out, 3 blinks. So i should be good to go. We are trailering to larry's tomorrow and we will ride where we can. I even loomed the power wire for my wifes HID's and im glad i did. She had a rub through in the same spot starting. Thanks for all the input and help guys. I learned a lesson on this one. NEVER take short cuts. I preach at my daughter all the time. If your going to do something do it right the first time. Looks like im taking some of my own medicine on this one. LOL!

always the best lesson, the one you teach yourself....glad you got it fixed! ;)!
