Cooling system help on 95 Vmax 600

Hi guys,

Coolant was looking rather dirty in my 600 so I decided to replace the coolant. Drained the old stuff, filled and then I bled the system taking out both bleed screws on the rear exchanger and running the sled until all bubbles were gone and nothing but coolant flowed from the bleed holes.

Put everything back together and ran the sled for a few minutes to heat things up and check the exchangers to make sure they all got warm, all three were heated up (throttle side was hot, rear and clutch side were warm) so I went to shut the sled off and noticed the temp light had come on so I opened the hood and the reservoir was empty..

I filled the reservoir back up, let things cool off for 10 minutes or so and then ran the sled for another couple minutes at 2500-3500rpm to get things flowing...temp light came back on..

Not sure what's going on, starting to be sorry I messed with it to begin with now..

Any ideas?

Most likley a air lock some where. I think these sleds are made to burp air out of the coolant bottle or somthing. Anyways refil the bottle, lift the back of the sled real high, run for a little, then bleed again, refile. And see how she works. Ussaly it takes more then one bleeding attemt to get it all out. Maybe some air traped by the sensor. If the exchangers are getting warm its not a big problem. Oh yea once you bleed the air out you ussaly have to top it off
 
Went out to the garage this morning to do a second bleed and when I popped the hood, the reservoir was empty again..it was full last night before coming in..

I took off the pressurized cap and filled to the top (it only took a little), started sled and filled (it barely took any more coolant) shut off the sled and then filled the reservoir again.

Then I jacked up the back of the sled real high and took out the clutch side bleed screw and coolant spurted out as soon as I took the screw out...I took that as a good sign..

Ran the sled for a minute with the rear high and bleed screw out just to be sure and then put the screw back in..

Then ran the sled for a couple more minutes just to get things hot, checked the exchangers again and all were warm.

Letting it cool down now, hoping that the reservoir doesn't empty out again...

I looked for any sign of leaks but did not see any..no coolant in the belly pan or anything..

It must be air some where, let it cool again and see how it works. You didn't touch any connections or replace any parts did you? And was it holding before?
 
Yeah, it was holding before I put new fluid in...only reason I decided to change it was because it had never been changed before.. no parts were replaced and the only connection that was touched was the hose that runs into the top of the head, took that off when getting the old fluid out..

Going to check on things in another hour or so when I get back home, will have had 5 hours or so to have cooled off..
 
Alright so we can rule out any leaks if it wasn't before. Take alook at your plugs and see if its burning coolant. Just of been a bad air lock, did you bleed the rear exchanger and the thermostat housing? On the head
 
Have not bled the thermostat housing on the head..wasn't aware of that..wasn't even aware the sled had a thermostat actually..will look for that when I get home..is it easily located?

Checked the reservoir when I got home, was still full..took it out and test drove the sled for 6 miles through the foot or so of powder we got last night. I checked the reservoir and exchangers periodically,..the reservoir was at the low mark of the bottle towards the end of the test run and the exchangers were warm throughout the run but never hot and the temp light did not come on..just topped off the reservoir and am going to go take another, longer test run...

Fingers crossed..
 
Just put on 80 miles, mixture of trails and lakes,..pushed it hard through the powder at times and took it easy on some groomed trails too.. no temp light and the reservoir stayed full the whole time.
