SXR no spark - but everything checks out ok

2000 SXR500 without spark... Was cruising along and the sled instantly died with no warning. Checked for spark and found there was none.

So, per the Yamaha service manual I have exhausted all the troubleshooting steps and everything checks out...
- Checked the spark plug gap and tried new plugs
- Checked the spark plug cap resistance and the ignition coil resistance
- Checked stator coil/magneto/pickup coil resistances
- Checked the engine stop switch, TORS, and main switch
- Installed a CDI unit from an 01 SXR 500 (still no spark!)

This is the extent of the trouble shooting chapter in the manual! Just because, I tried the ignition coil from the 01 SXR 500 and also the regulator/rectifier. So, the only igniton system component that hasn't been swapped is the stator assy. I removed the flywheel and visually inspected it, but that is all. Being as though it is the only component left, I feel like I should swap it out as my next step. Does anyone have ideas or input before I waste some more $$ : )

Have you tried the trick in the manual of unplugging the master relay behind the left footwell panel. I believe the manual says to unplug the white one to bypass the ignition and the sled should start.

Master relay behind the left footwell? Not sure what you are refering to here. I did not find this anywhere in the manual. Are you trying to describe bypassing the ignition switch?

In the manual in my mountain max there is a part about pulling the master relay and it bypasses everything and should allow the sled to start.
 
aka: load control relay. probably not on your 2000 500.

you will find those on the dual headlight sleds with the 360* ignitions. dont think the sxr's had them until 2001.

Ah, okay. You are correct, it's not on the 2000 500.

no spark is tested from the source(stator) out to the end(sp.plugs) theres a write up in the tech section on how to find the problem part, you need to do a dynamic check, a ohm check doesnt tell you anything really.

Thanks for the suggestion. I read your write up and have a few questions. I was under the impression that you need a scope to look at the output of the pickup module? Can you tell me what meter you are using and with what settings? Are you measuring V AC?
 
Let's start simple, get all the rust off the fly wheel and blow that b@tch out with compressed air. Sorry for the profanity, I have no love for that rust, it has made me scratch my head more than once.

I already had the flywheel off and visually inspected it. There is no rust on it.
 
go put your cdi in another 500 and see if it runs. then start pulling connectors apart starting from the stator/ pu area and yank on the cord and see if theres any voltage at all. if there is, move to the next closest conector until you get to the cdi, or find theres no voltage. you need a plan to rule things out instead of just trying abunch of stuff. this is what i would do
 
I had the same problem with my Viper, it just died. It turned out that a connection behind the right foot well plastic came apart. Re-connected that connection with a wire tie and never had another problem.
 
Had same problem back in the day with a 94 vmax, thing just died with no spark tried everything but wouldn't start... Left it for a few weeks and it fired up again... But only for a few moments or until I shut it off and then no spark again.... Replaced stator and sled was fine after that.
 
An update on this... I finally came across a used stator assy and installed it. It was a fix, and the sled has spark now. So, even though the original stator/pickup resistances checked out good, the parts were bad.
