97 sx 700 speedo not working

My speedo isn't working so I took off the drive gear thingy that is mounted to the end of the jackshaft and I'm not sure what its supposed to look like. First of all it was very hard to get off, once I had it off I hooked the cable up to it and when I spin it I can hear the speedo cable turning but it only works one way. When I turn it the way the drive axle spins it doesn't turn the speedo cable... If that makes any sense...Any info would be great thanks.

I have had the speedo drive fail... take the cable off that drive and spin and see if the needle moves a little.

Ok I'll try that, can you replace the speedo drive or do you need a whole new speedo?

You can just replace the drive... I may have an extra one at home. They are usually around $25 used.

Ok so I left the speedo cable hooked up to the speedo and spin the cable with my drill and the speedo works. If I hook it up to the drive( whatever the thing in the picture is) the speedo doesn't move. So I guess I need to replace the drive?? Do they commonly fail? Thanks for your help.

Not all to often... but I had one fail.

the jack shaft bearing is effed... almost guarantee it. that's why the speedo went out... super common problem. Don't leave... I didn't know about this... I ended up doing a lot more than just the 25 dollar bearing on the drive shaft when mine ate shit.

its the axle shaft boys, common mistake. the jack shaft is the one the secondary is bolted to. my buddys bearing went and he limped home with it running race to race, luckly the shaft was fine. i took my bearing off today and its half full of water! and its only 6 months old! the best thing to do is re pack it tight so no water can get in. do that once a year and you will never have another failure.

Obviously, you also need the 8K4-47715-00-00 JOINT

its the meter housing and they are plastic gears inside and you need a new one...and NOT necessarily a new bearing on the drive shaft. They do go bad . ive put 5 in my sx!

the best thing to do is re pack it tight so no water can get in. do that once a year and you will never have another failure.

Anyone want to add something to the tech section on how to do this without messing up the seals? Some say take the seals out, others say use a needle grease gun. Just a thought...

take the seals off use brake cleaner and comressed air, then re pack.
