CDI's purpose

I am looking at an '01 SRX, He says in the ad that it needs a little TLC. Carbs Cleaned and maybe a CDI.
My question is will the sled run at all if the CDI is bad or will it run poorly? Initially I was thinking it was running poorly hence needing the carbs cleaned but then when he mentioned the CDI I am thinking maybe something else.
I am waiting for his response via email so I just want to have as much info as possible

Usually when a CDI is defective the sled will not run at all...but the CDIs on the SRXs have many functions so it is possible to have a partial failure.

Ok, Thanks, It is an '01 and he hasn't ran it in 2 years- I think I am gonna grab it despite not hearing it run, It is well below $1000 so I dont think I can go wrong, worse case scenario is the motor is blown and he is giving me the "I havent had time to ride it so it just sat and the carbs are gummed up" to get out of it not running.
