Srx On Tar Today 3:16

We got rained out today. :whine: Thanks for the update, Tony.

Don, if mph gain is greater than the 13-15, which way do you need to go on gearing? Taller or shorter?

well youd need to look at your primary and see where your belt is running, if you gain more then 15mph from 660-1320 you are not running it out hard enough at the beginning of the run in my opinion.
Because the longer you are on the track, the more time you have to build mph, which is fine for speed running but not drag racing,at least not for me when tuning a sled in.
I look for the lowest elapsed time, which is a low 60ft time and then a hard charge to 660, then build a bit of mph on topend. usually around 13-15mph gain was where I would be..

I have about 3/16" of sharpie left on the primary on the '00 which has ported cylynders, cut heads, 10.5" track. Best 60' was 1.428 with 6.365 @ 103.98 1/8th and 10.217 @ 124.68. This is with 24/37 gearing and very low engagement (3200).

The 02 Stocker (INCLUDING gearing) has run a best of 1.487 60' with 6.768 @ 98.22 1/8th and 10.874 @ 116.48 with only loaded 8DN-20'S. I can't remember the marking thickness left on the primary at the moment, the sled is at my house.

When you say you ran a 1.41 60', was that a stock engine or modified?

I like that Tony has nearly the same sled, it is giving me a target. With my wife's '00 though I really don't know where I should be for 60' and 1/4 mile.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott

[Best 60' was 1.428 with 6.365 @ 103.98

Please explain " with 6.365" What does that represent??

Thanks
Augie

both stock and modified, I was always right in the low 1.4 for 60fts. They both would leave about the same. The key to the asphalt is the suspension, you get more taken off your et then anyhwere else by plantin the track and rollin it out.
I found most differance between stock and modded engines is the 660ft, alot quicker with modded and then a slight bit more mph at end.

mph is indictive of your hp output!

Stock (no airbox) I have been 10.25-10.28 on cool good air nights.
modded- low 10.05/8's-10.10,12,/128mph with more to get out of it but ran out of time to tune for end of season, was a customers sled and he wanted it for racing on ice. I was confident that it could dip into the high 9 's with it. Stock yamaha pipes still @ 8700rpm..... :sled2:

With aftermarket pipes it likely could have gone mid to lower 9's pretty easily, was my lake race engine set up, 38mm carbs,no airbox.

problem is the price of the pipes, very expensive($1300) but youll get around 10/12 real hp additional more over stock pipes on a warmed over srx.

SCOTT YOUR 02 AND MY 2000 ARE CLOSE. MOST SAY ON TAR, KEY TO BETTER E.T. IS CUT WEIGHT OUT OF SLED. I WON,T DO IT. I LOVE IT STOCK. NOW I WOULD SAY YOUR 2000 REAL CLOSE, WE ALSO RUN A 1998 700 SX IMPROVER, THAT HAS BEEN LITE,EN ALOT HIS TIMES ARE VERY SIMILAR TO YOURS. DON RIGHT ON 60 F.T. TIMES CONTROL YOUR RUN. 3:16 (yammie tony)

AUGDOG: 6.365 is the 1/8th mile ET (elapsed time). 103.98 is 1/8th mile speed. 10.217 and 124.68 are the 1/4 mile ET and speed.

Don: Thanks for putting me in my place! You really know how to pump an ego! LOL! But seriously, thanks that is what I was looking for: a target. Am I correct in asuming those times were with a 10.5" track and are they really worth 2-3 tenths over the 15" tracks? Also, were those with Heel Clickers or factory weights?

Tony: I'm with you! I refuse to modify the sleds buy "gutting" them and stuff. I like them all stock!

First off,I think both of you guys are doing a GREAT job, you have to remember I did this tar racing for 4 years straight so its all in learning, you guys are going pretty fast already. I hope you dont stop tuning because its a continuous learning curve but the information you gain with clutching is absolutely non replaceable!!!
The asphalt lets you see whats happening with the clutchs thru out your run via the timeslip. Study your timeslips and watch what happens to your gain or loss of time and mph from the 60ft, then the 330ft,660ft then the 100ft,1320ft..
You will know what to change and why either on snow, ice or dirt, the information/knowledge you gain is better then anything youll ever read in a book.
The biggest thing I could say to do is to constantly take notes!! I used to staple each time slip to my notebook as soon as i got back from the return road, and make tach notes(used vdo replay tach),air temp, etc and the way the run went along with the clutch set up.
This will help you about 2 days later after you have calmed down., sit down with your book and read your notes and study the slips, you get a blueprint on whats going on during your run. you wont be able to absord all the information right there on race night, too much distraction and stuff going on, youll see what i mean when you give it a couple days and reread your notes.

stocker was 15 wide track, modded sled was 10.5 track. the skinny track is a little faster however you have to mess with the suspension more to get the same 60ft, the 15 wide hooks nice on the 60fts.
watch your track tension, you need them banjo tight, a tighter track is faster then a looser track on asphalt. I bent many track adjuster bolts trying to get enough tension on the track!!
I used both stock yamaha weights, 8bu-00(Tonys favorite...lol),89a10, and also what worked great were the supertips.

HEY, DON LOVEs 8BU-00 AFTER ALL. lol. NOW I GET YA TO TRY 8BU-10,s !!!! LOL. don right on, those time slips worth their weight in gold. 3:16 (yammie tony)

My wife gets a kick out of my "bible" as she calls it. I have a 3" 3-ring binder overflowing with pages of info, mostly gotten from this sight. I also enter all our runs into a "spreadsheet" with notes, desciptions, tuning specs, weather, etc and also calculate the time between each segment for each run. What I mean is the time it takes from the 60" to the 330", the 330' to the 660', etc, and mph gain 660 to 1320. Don's right, it is hard to digest everything at the track, especially when I am trying to keep track of 2 sleds and my 2 boys (6 & 8 years old). Wouldn't trade it for anything though!

I also just found out the other night, my wife has been making it a 1500' track. She stays in the throttle until she passes the scoreboards which are about another 100'+ beyond the finish line. Shame on me for not bringing her to the top end to see the finish line! LOL! Again, wouldn't trade it for anything!

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the offer, Jeff. I have a set in the '00 now with 2.4g in the first hole and 4.5g in tip if I remember right (notes are out in the garage at the moment) I also have a set of Heavy Hitters I am going to start working with for my '02. 51.8g base weight.

scott, your wife might of gave ya a tip and you don,t even know it. ask her if sled still pullling hard at 1500 f.t. , COULD BE ALITTLE GEARING QUESTION ANSWERED THERE. lol. AND HEY I KNOW ABOUT THE BINDER. I GO TO BED WITH MY TIME SLIPS. WAKE UP NEXT DAY THEIR ALL OVER THE FLOOR lol. 3:16 (YAMMIE TONY)

I was thinking the same thing Tony. Also realizing that the sharpie marking in the promary may not be very acurate anymore. We race next Saturday and I'll remark the primary and take a walk to the top end to check out the finish line. Will rethink the gearing then. Should there be any marker left on the primary or will the belt clean right to the edge at full shift?

When do you run again Tony?

yamaha primary won,t complete shift out, none of them do. scott don,t panic if ya seen a slight spot, there should be a slight marker spot right at edge. i myself won,t be at the track tomorrow (sat) but my srx will be. i will post results. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Hey guys, working on my asphalt sled and all most ready. where are you guys putting the cooling couplers on the sled? at the back or in the front where the coolant reservoir bottle is? Also what would be the best 1/8 mile time my stock 01 700 srx would be capable of getting? I see some at 6.6 6.5 is it capable of getting them faster then that?

my cooling couplers are at front by reservoir. i say sure your capable of alot of different times, but again its all in your set-up. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Thanks for the reply. What i was looking for was a realistic goal for me to get to and that is to get to the fastest time the sled is able of getting. I was thinking it would be better i guess to have the couplers inside.

I was always told it was better to have the couplers under the hood because if you put them at the rear it will just circulate the water through the rear cooler and not cool down the rest of the system. just what I was told.

I have quick couplers out back for the cool down system and works just fine, cools everything in 5 to 7 minutes
