speedo cable - grease

I unhooked the speedo cable from my 99 vmax 500 and I took the cover off of the drive shaft end, on the chasis behind the secondary. there was some grease in the cover(cap) and I cleaned it out. should I put fresh grease in there ? there is no grease nipple on there. how did the grease get there ? what grease? snowmobile or wheel bearing ?
 
There should be a grease fitting underneath where the cable screws in. And yes there should be grease in there.
 
I apologize, i'm going crazy, hahahaha, i just got done working on a mxz and for some reason was thinking that there was a grease nipple on the Yamaha but it was the ski-don't. Sorry!
