well got some things to do with the SRX before I fog it and put it to sleep.I decided to check out the PV's and cables.Took everything out and am surprised the valves are in good shape and not to dirty.The cables also are not frayed or cut..so that is great.I was using Yamalube for most of last winter and seems to be good for the valves.
I notice I have an oil leak from the chain case.There is always a small puddle on the floor.Checked the drain plug and it is dry there.Looks like leaking from the cover somewhere as it is wet in front of the chain case.This really makes no sense since the gasket is in place and all is tight.So gonna drain the oil and change it and try and see why I have a leak there.
Found the set screws of the bearing were loose that tighten to the jackshaft on the PTO side.So red lock tightened them today.Re packed the bearing with grease/Got to remove the speedo cover plate and grease that bearing for the driveshaft as well. as well.Kinda hard to get in the mood when the weather is nice and I am always outside doing something,but will get the damn SRX out of the garage soon.Got to get ready for grass cutting soon.
 
grass is growing now,but not ready to cut it yet.Had a lot of damage to lawn after this long cold winter.The Voles really chewed up a lot of areas...
 
well found out more bad news with the SRX.I took the chain cover off,inspected gasket and it was fine,didn't see anything else cracked..filled her up with oil and ran it on a stand.Then fogged motor and put it away.Well today I see a puddle of oil under the sled again... :o| :o| .Looks like I have a PROBLEM now.And when I ran the track the other day after tightening the 2 set screws on the jackshaft bearing,I am getting a big wobble.You can see the side where the bearing is secured move back and forth.So that tells me also the shaft is shot.. :o|
Just can't win with these older sleds already.Looks like i will keep the SRX parked for next winter and ride my newly extended 144 SXR. Don't have any funds to throw into the SRX now.It is becoming a sore and a money pit.The SXR always runs good,never breaks down and super reliable.Maybe I have a cracked chain case or something but ain't gonna touch nothing now maybe till next Summer..one sled is enough to work with anyways...
 
Yes it takes a special type of person to PROPERLY mantain a high performance sled like the srx.A good mechanical ability is not something that every man has.Problems like this happen when changing a track or putting the bearing lock collers in wrong order as you have found out.

Those shafts dont bend, likely the shaft is worn under the bearing and when the set screws are done up it sits crooked .YES Just like the last time!If the coller that sits inside the top seal,,, top shaft between the chaincase and the brake is missing the large nut pulls on the bearing retainer and has nothing to stop against.

It works the same way as the bottom shaft TIGHTEN the gear nut first than set the bearing and its lock setscrews!

Its a ability to take something apart and figure out how it works checking things as you go that makes one sled faster than the other guy.And be reliable.LOL

I gather the shaft is worn.Since the set screws got loose,I know the shaft can wear.I have an extra shaft here I can use and get a new bearing and it is done.What really is bugging me now is why oil is leaking from the chain case.The plug is good and no oil leaking down from it,it shows up inside.From no where this starts to happen,thats where I get f*#ken pissed .Sleds are put away for the time being,so not going to do anything now.I will be riding the SXR more next winter anyways now.Going to be in search for deep snow next season,will be heading East to the Parks and the Hills for some deep snow riding ..
 
that seal would be way higher then the fluid level in the case.The sled is sitting mostly,only turned the chain for a few seconds to check the shaft..but continues to leak .There is typical oil in front of the case where there is that small drain hole.
 
I thought the oil sat half way up the driveshaft? See exactly where the oil is coming from. Reach into the driveshaft where it connects to the tunnel frame and see if it is wet there.

I will try that.You think 8.5 oz of oil will sit that high up in the case.I hope that is it.I have 2 brand new oil seals here that I have not used yet from a few years back.I see that a jackshaft is expensive also,best I can find is for $208 from the US and plus shipping.I have another spare shaft,is is used,got it years ago from another member.I slipped a bearing on it and it has a slight play in it.Was thinking if it was possible to drill another hole and tapping it for another set csrew.That way when you tighten the screws,it will tighten equal all around.Now with the set screws more to one side it will throw the bearing off slightly..

Jackshaft? If the jackshaft is leaking just sitting you're way over-filled. LOL.

Hate to see you buy a jackshaft if you really need a driveshaft.

I've never done it, but perhaps shimming (like BTV suggests on susp shafts) between the shaft and bearing to eliminate the slop. At least you'd know the bearing is centered on the shaft.

I personally think the seal on his driveshaft is leaking, but he doesn't need a new jack shaft because of the leak, apparently the set screws on the bearing wore a groove or something.

Yes. If you read from the beginning of thread, you will find out there are 2 different problems. Worn out jackshaft and a leaky driveshaft seal.
 
well I was thinking about shimming the bearing to get it tight to the shaft.I tried that on a spare shaft that has a tad of movement between the bearing and shaft.Tried with really thin alum,flattened it out with a hammer..but still won't really slip in between.Maybe on the shaft on the sled there will be more play and can get a shim inside it to keep it balanced.
I went to check the SRX today for that leak.Felt around where the driveshaft goes thru tunnel to the case..nothing.Even shoved a white cloth in there to see if it would get oily..nothing.So the seal is good then.Starting to think it is leaking from somewhere else now because the oil on the floor is darker and does not smell like ATF...maybe cracked line or oil tank is leaking..but it all seems to show up in front of the chain case area...have to get in for a closer look and try to find the path of the leak..

Maybe from the exhaust pipe outlet from all the fogging you did?
