Hello TY,Newbie here,,, awesome site...
Picked up 3 used V-Max sleds a few weeks back.
A pair of 1996 V-Max 600, One runs great other parts sled (owner crashed it).

Seller resurrected a 1994 V-Max 600, sold it for $200 more if I get all three sleds on the same deal.... Hell yea,,, 3 sleds for $1K... I'll take 'em....

1994 V-Max was real noisy on the top end running in the garage.
I pulled off the Y pipe and found a little scaring on one of the pistons.
So I torn the top end down and here is what I found....

A Small scratch in the cylinder, below the exhaust port, just nuff to catch a finger nail,, not too deep.

My ? is what are the specs for the cylinder and pistons? I have searched here 1st but not much luck on the 600. Gonna take the cylinders down to the local NAPA as I heard he can guage the bore and see where we are.

I'm hoping I can scotch bright the cylinder and maybe new pistons/rings? Sled will be wife's sled, no need for super powers but reliable...

What is the wear spec for the 600 anyone ?

wear limit for cylinder :74.9mm
taper: +/- .05mm
out of round:+/-.01mm
piston standard size: 74.702-74.721
*be sure to measure 15 mm up from bottom of piston skirt

I never made it to NAPA for measurements...
We have got to start there,, got a dirt bike buddy at work that can hook me up with some dimentions
 
what did you end up doing for the scratch in the bore below the exhaust port? were these jugs nikasil/chrome plated or just cross hatch on steel?
 
Make sure the oil pump is functioning, common problem on these twins. The small "flat head" looking tab on the end of the pump rounds off and you will never know its not turning, until you seize the motor that it.

You must be talking about the 'Regulator' part the cable goes to?

I took a tip from you guys and I'm running Pre-Mix in it now.. :sled1:
When cleaning the carbs there was like no way any oil would mix in there for 5 min or so.
Bonus was, I think I smoked ever single bug out of the garage !

Lookin' Pretty good, Got some detailing done tonight, will upload pics soon....

Hey thanks Backwoods for sticking with me on this long thread !

Answer : Honed the Pi$$ out of them both.
Answer 2: Gonna have to go with Nagasaki Chrome on this one, super hard with a shiny, (light) spiderweb of cross hatching.


Went with the SPC Pistons kit,the stockers were killed..

The scratch never really went away but faded and was smooth again.
No catch 'ems around the port....New pistons fix sooo much better....

The thing I keep reminding my self is...
Put it back together, break it in and RUN IT !
It's a used 2 Stroke and I'm gonna be running the CRAP out of this thing...

It's hard to tell from that pdf schematic but looks like a very similar pump. See my thread here where I posted pics of what the bad pump tab looks like vs a good pump tab. If yours is bad and you stop running that pre mix, it will go boom again ;)

biglsells 1st then mine...PTO side gettin' a bit toasty...

That might have actually been the start of this whole tread with the oil pump not running (very well at least) started to fry the pistons.

What a bummer to get the wife on her new (to her) sled and hear that "Do you smell something hot? It's not running very good and just died"

You can see the oil pump right there on the left.....
At least I think that is it,,, is where the cable goes to from the throttle ?

Yup that's it and boy the oil level didn't seem to go down much..ummmmm
I bet I should replace that crusty A.. filter while I'm in there...
'Nother part number search....... ;):D

-T.S.S. Maintenance
On most every used T.S.S. sled I've bought the Knuckles and steel bushing are frozen and completely locked up and pivoting on the bolts ! I've bought sleds that the locked up joints won't even allow the springs to return let, alone the struts to work when hitting a bump. The T.S.S sleds have always gotten a bad rap for slop developing when the ungreased steel bushing's freeze up they grind away on the nylon washers ! I have sleds that are 15+ years old that have never had a bushing kit and are almost as tight as new. Just take the knuckles and the ski mounts apart every other year and grease !
