Motor issues...

Hi everyone, I'm new to all of this but enjoy the site, so much info! I've purchased an 03 viper that melted down the mag side before I bought it. The previous owner stuck an aftermarket piston in it and it runs fine but he stuck two standard head bolts in it and it leaks like crazy. I have found a used cylinder and yamaha piston in excellent shape so I guess my question is would it be best to intall my "new" used parts and re-ring all three cylinders? I'd just like to fix it the proper way so I don't have to do this again lol thanks
 
well I guess how far you go with it depends on how much peace of mind you want and how much you know about the sled.

First, how many miles on it? Also, was anything else ever done to the engine? If the previous owner forced 2 standard bolts into it then who knows what other foolish things were done. These things are all at the age where they are due for crank seals if they've never been done before. Then there's the host of preseason things to check, but one bridge at a time.

X2.. The standard bolts put in would make me think as to why and what happened to the originals.
 
Yes that's what I was thinking to, said he lost bolts and I guess just to lazy to buy new ones. But I bought the sled knowing this and got a steal of a deal!! Anyway the sled has 8200 km and the bottom end was done professionally, he gave me the receipt. But will check when I tear it down! The previous owner told me the crank seal went in it and lead to the failure. Then he put Simmons cpr's on it and confused the mag side with pto and messed up the jetting, resulting in the failure for the second time. So he put a cheap piston in it and it seems to run fine but I'd like to go through it and replace the random junk, and get things back to normal.
 
So just an update! The viper motor has been gone through new seals, gaskets, rings, clips, bearings etc.. So I have simmons cpr pipes on it and I found that they call for 160 160 162.5 mains and 47.5 pilots its screws 2 turns out does this sound right also my needles are on the 4th clip with washers on top. Does this sound right? Haven't fired it up yet anything I should do? Turn oil pump up (someone told me to do so)??

needles are wrong, thats only a 3.25 setting. Your going to want for sure in the mag and center a 4.0 posistion if you want it to live, thats the 4th grrove down with both shims under the clip. The pto(clutch side) can be run at 3.5 which is the 4th groove down and 1 shim on top and 1 under the clip.
 
Awww.. Thanks mr viper that would have sucked lol! Will change that when installing the pilots. Anything I should do on the initial start up?
