Rear skid recommendations?

I'm eventually looking to upgrade the skid on my 2002 Vmax. I can get a RX1 skid, but from what I can tell, it's not all that much of an improvement. What do u guys recommend? Maybe a skid from an early 2000's Ski doo MXZ? How big of a job is this going to be? Thanx.
 
In short move the rear hole plates back 2 1/2 in ,remove front brackets and put them were the front axle ends up.

Nice. Doesn't sound too bad. So, what do u think about the RX1 skid? I might be able to get one for practically nothing. Do u think it would be a noticeably good improvement over the Vmax skid? Or do u think that I would regret not have going for the skidoo ( or something similar ) skid? I'm guessing that the same amount of work is involved with the rx1 skid as would be with something else? Thanx.
 
would probably need the transfer rods too but don't treat this as gospel. I'm not too up on the rx1 skids. I know they're longtraveled proactions but i'm not 100% if there are any other differences with the 2 strokers.
 
What model 2002 do you have.Certain models have the same amount of suspension travel as the rx1.
Best bang for the buck is get a doo,pol, or cat skid

Not sure on which model. All it says is Vmax and trail performance. It has electric start and reverse. 121 track. And regular seat. The shocks are not rebuildable if that makes a difference. Also, they don't have the threaded adjustment like the XTC shocks.
 
sounds like the vmax er. same skid as the rx1(pro-action plus) except the rx did have a rebuildable shock at the front of the skid along with adjustable transfer rods. beyond that, same travel, same skid.
 
unless you can get a sc103 or newer, I wouldn't bother to go to a skidoo skid.

the rx skid is a crapy version like what you have.

what you need to update your skid to something better is aluminum shocks from
xtc/viper/sxr. Have them rebuilt and revalved by most anyone at this point, they all have good setups. You also need the gold side arms from one of these sleds or from a sx/srx are also the same. They have bearings in them. also, you will need bearings for the front shock. Rebuild your skid and shim it tight, use revalved shocks and you will be amazed how good it is.

If the rx skid is a new takeout, the shocks are a decent upgrade in ride. The problem is you still have bearing issues.
if you can get it for nothing, get it, use the front shock, and rails. This skid has a better lower front shock mount style.

BETHEVIPER, that is really good info. I was reading that link lastnight while searching threw the forum. Good stuff! I may go that direction. But as of now, I might use just the front rear shock from the rx1 as u mentioned. I have some buddies here locally that are keeping their eyes open for a SC10 3 for me.

Snowdad4, thanx for the info. I would've never known that they were the same skids with the exception of the front shock.
 
How about a Viper complete rear skid? Would it be much of an improvement over my 02 vmax ER stock skid/suspension? Any modifying involved to install it? Or is it a direct bolt in? I found the Viper skid for pretty cheap.
 
a viper skid is better, unless it is a viper S, it then has shocks that ride great and don't seam to have held up well.
this skid will have the newer front lower mount, which is better but could still be reiforced, arms will have bearings, rear shock has bearings and is rebuildable. Much better skid than a rx1.
that being said, you will want to revalve the shocks and tighten the skid up.
 
i dont know what you are trying to accomplish, but i used a zrt 600 skid. i like it alot for my type of riding and it took about 2 hours to do the swap. the zr skids might not be what you want though so dont take my word for your type of riding.

Lots of groomed trail riding with fast riders. Taking the wife on back from time to time. Just looking for extra rear travel to help soak up the extra weight.
 
How about sending all of your current shocks into PIONEER. Have them L/T'ed and revalving to your weight + riding gear.
Then you'll have essential, a brand new skid that is set to act and react to your weight and riding style.
I had him replace the stock rear spring w/ a "FAT BOY" spring. I'm 295 w/o my gear. The stock spring didn't have a chance in he!!
