I have a 1995 vmax 500 we just put a new crank pistons and clutch into it last season, we rode it maybe 5 times the last 2 times it was the kids riding it and was run at low speeds we wouldnt have broke 25mph 30mph the last ride we went on it started to bog and backfire and had all kinds of trouble keeping it running.
I have cleaned the carbs and changed the spark plugs thinking it was foweled plugs or some bad fuel. Nothing has changed no power, boggy ,backfiring, but it idles fine and sounds great untill its underload.

Sounds like it could be TORS kicking in (throttle over ride system). Common cause is too tight throttle cable, possibly bad TORS switch on carb rack or handlebar throttle block. Check owners manual for adjustment procedures/specs.
tors is my 1st guess. my 2nd would be an obstruction in the exh/muffler.
