possible oil pump failure?!?!?!?!?!

so i got my sled going(finally) when i was running it i noticed it was a little bit smokier than normal, after shutting it of i looked at the throttle block to find the oil cable with a loop in it, so i pulled the carbs and uncovered the pump and this is what i found. video is freezing, but if i flip the oil pump arm fast, it does not hang up, but if i hold it open for a little then let it down it hangs up as seen in the video. the reason it was smoking like i said was because the pump arm did not retract all the way. i did pull the spring off and it seems to be coming from in the pump
any ideas whats causing this?!?!!?! what do i do now?
 
Video does not work for me but I get what your talking about. So did you unhook the cable and see how it moves then? Could the cable just need to be lubed? I've had them gum up before and act slow.
 
Was the cable stuck or was the arm stiff? Depending on brand and oil quality and storage conditions that oil in the pump could have gotten sticky. I have a model airplane engine that I haven't touched in probably 15 years and had mystery oil put in it for after run oil. It's all evaporated now and the engine is glued together, needs a wd-40 bath to try and free it up. Maybe the same thing is causing the arm to stick, either the bushing for the arm or the actual mechinizm inside.
 
Video work for me, With cable unhooked and him moving the pump arm with his finger it would stop about 1/3 stroke from down (off). Not sure if it was the vid freezing or what but it seemed like sometimes it stops, then continues on its own. Other times it seemed to just stay there. I had sound turned off so I don't know if sled was running?
 
Sled wasn't running, it would stop about 1/3 from seat position. Probly just gummed up, I don't think it's the cable as it was removed from the arm... Gotta be something sticking
 
yeah cable was off, and it only sticks when u hold it at wot position for a few seconds, if i move it fast i feel no resistance at all:dunno:

video was freezing a little but what you saw is right.
 
had it all apart after that video, clean and lubed. works a little better. im going to re try with the engine running, maybe it needs to be pumping to run right?
 
If needed I have an extra oil pump I bought when I thought mine was toast, well I didnt end up using it I think it came off a 98 sx 700 triple. I believe I also have an extra cable if you wanted it. Let me know if I can help you out

Had the exact sametrhing last year on my 01 MM700, pump arm had an internal sticking point, would not return to idle end of stroke, I replaced the $300 pump, pulled motor to do so PIA job.
 
well now im confused, i just went out, ran the sled around the year quick and heated her up and now it does not stick.... at all. maybe it just needed to be run:?:? i will keep an eye on it this year and watch for any problems from it

How long was it sitting? Not used... that is. Id think with the vibration it would come down quickly but better its not staying closed instead!! LOL
As said above try penetrating oil on the pivot shaft and might as well hit the cable while you're at it. If its been a while squirt some in the throttle cable at the top so it does not stick closed one day.
 
i cleaned the spring and every thing an it seems to of helped a little, after i ran it today and go it HOT it stopped sticking, maybe just thick oil in the pump or somthing idk. if she fails ill take it to the stealership and let them deal with it. i have had this sled apart since April and am getting sick of it being apart lol
 
question for everybody - is the arm supposed to travel all they way to the stop at idle? I know that you adjust to 21 mm when you pull the cable apart up top. The bracket on the pump that holds the cable also seems to be in a weird spot too - seems to put pressure on the cable as it travels between carb 1 and 2 - or is cable supposed to pass under carb 1? Curious and having a similar situation on my 2000 sx700R
