The choke works as an enrichener. When you flip the lever, it pulls the cable, which is attached to a piston in the carb. This opens up a fuel passage that allows more fuel into the carb bore. The fuel system works off the vacuum of the crankcase. The ''Mixer" as you call it is the fuel pump. Vacuum from the crankcase (via hose from crankcase to fuel pump)actuates a diaphram in the fuel pump, in turn drawing fuel from the tank and then outward to the carb.
