Just bought an 03 Viper ER a couple days ago. It didn't sound quite right to me when I picked it up but I thought it was just me. Anyways, I went to fire it up tonight and it took forever to start and didn't idle very good...still sounding off. When I rev it up, it seems sluggish and when idling down it hangs around 3000RPM for a few seconds before coming back down. Compression seemed low @ 90 lbs but is even across. It has new plugs in it. Any ideas? What would be a common pre-season tune up? I'm not a mechanic but I do have a service manual to guide me.
 
i would say that the top end is bad @90psi, should be around 130. but you say its even across the board, so that leads me to think its okay and just the tester giving a false reading, try another one for argument sake. sounds like carbs, probably a plugged pilot. so clean the carbs, they are very easy to do and there are write ups in the tech section with pictures to guide you through it.
 
pre season stuff for me is crabs, do a fluid check, track tension, slides if they need to be done, grease every thing and that's about it.
 
Actually if all is stock the Viper shouldn't be even compression, but it could have had a head mod done. As said already, carb clean an absolute must, also powervalve clean and adjustment.
 
I pulled my carbs off and went through the cleaning procedure, didn't really find anything but it seems to be running a lot better:) Oh, and I found out why it was starting so hard....the choke cable was way out of adjustment causing it to not apply the choke at all. Thanks to all that replied
