95 vmax gas millage/excessive oil

just picked up a 95 vmax 600 for practically nothing, it runs good, but previous owner said it was getting about 40 miles a tank. he brought it in and had the carbs gone through. I did notice that there is oil coming out of the header pipe. The previous owner didnt say anything about it going through a lot of oil but im assuming it did by the amount that drips out the header pipe.


what are my options here?

reeds? oil injection set too high? It seems to have strong compression. Will check tho.

These sleds were very hard on gas and oil. Pigs to be exact. The oil dripping from header is just a bad gasket, order up a new one and easy fix. check your pump for proper adjustment http://www.totallyamaha.net/forums/showthread.php?56995-97-500-XT-oil-pump&p=374347#post374347 Post #7. Not your exact sled but adjustment is same. I kept it about 2mm on the lean side, yamaha set it way to rich on oil from factory. Now as far as gas goes just make sure everything is in specs as in good plugs and caps, carbs adjusted right. I would do myself just to make sure. Make sure clutch's are clean and wear parts are in good shape, a bad clutch will eat up a ton of MPG. Take them off, clean them up and clean belt as well. Other then that about 8-10 on a good day for MPG with these sleds is about all your gonna get.
 
The exhaust gaskets on this sled are not typical gaskets, they fit in a recess in the exhaust port and crush when tightened to make the seal. I don't know if you want to try and add some high temp rtv to the mix to help seal???
 
if your not seeing 9-11 mpg with that sled, you need to make some adjustments. not what i would refer to as a fuel pig at that mileage, thirsty perhaps.

there were several updates and bulletins offered by yamaha for the twins of that vintage with high fuel and oil consumption, yours may not have been addressed.

you guys are spot on with the high temp silicone (permatex), recommended by yamaha at the time to deal with the leaking flanges on the 94-95 500 and 600. suggested applying it to both the gasket and the y-pipe gasket groove.

as super1 mentioned, clutches can rob economy. the twins were known to be hard on the wear parts inside the clutch, most noticably the rollers and bushings in my experience. must have been some sort of engineering wisdom changing the roller pin diameters after 97.

Can you elaborate on the updates/bulletins that Yamaha issued? I would like to make sure that everything has been done to my 1994 VMAX 600.

in 1995 there was a carb slide and spring update which included new needles. after the slide update, spec was changed for the float height in 1996. along with the float spec, there were some needle changes using a half thickness needle shim along with an air screw spec increase. changes were again suggested for the 96 models in 97.

for the oil pump, there was a new procedure aligning the marks on the pump and then adding 2mm extra to the cable adjuster.

it would be hard to determine if any of these were done to your sled, but gives you an idea what to look for. i had had all those model years and have the print outs. no scanning equipment and too much to type in. there would be a mailing possibility.

I'll post it up as soon as I get the papers. Unless they arrive this weekend when I'll be out showing the ski doos what my taillight looks like.
 
Also know that when the oil pumps fail they go full rich with oil. I had a Venture 500 that the oil pump failed and just stared dumping oil. A new pump cured the problem.
 
Received the info in the mail today. I'll get it scanned and posted tomorrow. I quickly scanned over it and it's some good info to have around. Some of it's stuff that I hadn't read myself in all my various searches.
