Operation: Viper Rocket?

Hello fellas! Last year I picked up a 04 Viper S that barfed a crank. After rebuilding it, I focused mostly on the suspension. I did an Sc103 rear skid, Cobra 1.35" track, dual rate front springs, and re valved all the shocks. It snakes thru the twistys great, and did awesome in the powder for a short track.

However it was a bit of a pooch when racing the guys. I ride with an Apex, Nytro 144, and a non HO Doo 800. They all go past me.:whine: I know I need to work on my clutching.

At the end of last season I scored a set of SLP pipes for a good price. There are plenty of threads on TY relating to a piped Viper burn down, and bad milage. I ran an SXR 600 with Hauck pipes two years ago with great power, reliability, and decent milage.
My first question is: Can this sled have those "magic 3"? (power, reliability, and decent milage)

The recipe I am thinking is: SLP Pipes (already have), DCS (already have 04), Triple EGT(found one in classifieds), equal head cc's, Opticool head gasket, and Holtzman tempaflow (so i can adjust my jetting for mileage and or lean conditions)

Then play with the clutching.

Does this sound like a combo that could be operated safe but still pull on an Apex?

I used to run a Speedwerx piped Viper Mtn, no other mods besides clutching and jetting to match. Your fuel mileage will suffer some but SLP's are the pipes to have for a Viper IMO.

As far as pulling on an Apex... well I think it'd be close. The Apex has a long torque curve and just seems to keep on tractoring...

Lots of information on here about heelclicker setups and many other clutching setups. Do a search and there is lots of information on SLP pipes for Vipers.
 
I have over 2,000 trouble free miles on my piped viper right now. My one buddies friend had a viper piped when it was brand new. He changed the rings at 5,000 miles and ended up taking out a piston at almost 10,000 miles with hauck pipes. Mine has bender triples and I get from 9-12mpg depending on how im driving it. So you can get the magic three out of a piped viper.
 
My viper has a bender 4x4 single pipe. Cobra track and walks apex's and nytro's SO FAR. Clutching does wonders. Also this is anything short of 660' not across the lake or anything
 
You can run apexs down with GOOD pipes like SLP, porting, heads, gearing, clutching, etc. I do it, but of course gas mileage is like 8mpg. But who cares anyway really. Its a recreational sport.
 
Thank you for the advice guys. I printed the SLP installation instructions. It calls for very minimal clutching changes: 8Ek weights with 13.9mm steel rivets inner and outer, Yel-Wht-Yel (stock) primary spring, 47* helix (stock), Red spring (stock) wrapped 70*.

If I am not mistaken the only thing it calls for, different from stock, is the rivets and maybe the wrap.

Is this because these pipes peak at a lower RPM than most? (8900)

One last question: Would a heelclicker kit be a waste of money if i am not studded? I am trying to get away from just buying a clutch kit. This is what i have done in the past and I have not learned much from it. I would like to do more tuning and adjusting in the clutch department.
 
If you are still running your cobra you will be fine. I have heel clickers in my clutch and a 121 cobra track. (I LOVE THAT TRACK) As long as you run your secondary clutch fairly loose (minimal wrap) you should get little to no spin. The heel clickers also need bigger clutch rollers 15.6mm if i remember correctly. If you leave the stock ones in you will spin, spin, spin.
