2001 mountain max hesitation

I have a problem with my mountain max 2001, well a few. Anyway this problem is it will start on the first pull. Then die for a second. If it makes it thru this point it will keep running. 1/2 the time it will die and I will have to start it again. It runs idles fine otherwise. I thought I read something about a defective relay. Any thoughts? Thanks for any and all help. :2strokes:
 
I will look when I tear into the carbs again. I just cleaned them, but may have missed something. FYI it is usually with the choke engaged that the hiccup happens.
 
is it when the headlight comes on about 2-3 seconds after it starts?
 
I never thought bout it, but it seems like that would be bout right. It hesitates about there.
 
the dual bulb redhead has this relay problem, try switching it to high beam when starting, should go away

Thanks Snowdad4. This is an awesome site, with really knowledgeable helpful people. Hey snowdad what is involved in installing this kit? a plug and play replacement, or more involved?
 
kit is a plug and play, if you can find one. thats why i mentioned "try" to order one. i was thinking they may have been discontinued.

dont take partzillas word for it, darken the doorstep of your local yamaha dealer or make a few calls to surrounding dealers. i just walked someone through this a few months back as theirs came with no directions(yours will too). not sure how partzilla does it, but my local dealer can access things from different warehouses like la, georgia, wisconson, etc.

try calling port yamaha, a site sponsor here, the kit used to be around $10. even with shipping your ahead of the game. picking up a parts order locally tomorrow, i will have them run the number and see what i get for an answer. good luck!
 
Ok so I get they kit really fast and brand new. The information that came with it is amazing and complete. NOT! So I have a relay and a wiring harness. What on earth do I do with this? It lloks like i would take off the shroud around the knee area, and it looks like it all might go on the left hand side in some fashion, maybe....Does this replace a relay, or do I need to find a new home for it? HELP! Please.
 
I found an old thread about this issue, and it looks like all the information is there, but I will post if I cannot figure it out. Thanks for all who posted.
 
remove the 3 screws securing the left side of the tank shroud.
remove the handlebar pad and disconnect the high/low beam switch coupler. theres a yellow/green/blue on the switch side and green/blue-white or green-blue on the main harness side.
install the new subharness in-line between the high/low switch couplers. in other words, on one end of the new by-pass theres 2 couplers that will mate only one way wioth the beam switch couplers.
route the new subharness down the steering gate and reuse the existing plastic bands to secure it.
remove the existing headlight relay(should be blue in color)connect the new harness to the existing relay coupler then connect the new relay(if it isnt already attached) to the new harness's sub lead.

all the connectors are plug and play and wont interchange with other couplers. you dont need your old relay anymore. save it for fun. put thiongs back together and your done!
