need help with 70 link chain

Anyone have any information on Yamaha chains. I bust a chain on my 1999 vmax 700 this weekend. it looks like the one on my fx nytro but my nytro is 68 link so it wont fit. So I found a chain at the dealer that's 70 link and it fits my vmax (or at least its on there) but comparing this 70 link to the one I bust they look different. The one I bust looks a lot beefier and more support links. did Yamaha redesign the chains for more strength ? im thinking if I use this chain it wont last long ? appreciate any help. thanks
 
Yamaha used 3 types of chain in most of the late 90's - early 2000's proaction chassis sleds: Silent/Rexnord 13 plate, Silent/Rexnord 15 plate, and HYVO/Borg Warner 13 plate.
Your vmax likely used Silent/Rexnord 13 plate. 2000-up SRX & Viper used HYVO/Borg Warner. The chains do look visually different from each other.
You don't want to mix a HYVO chain on Silent gears, or vice-versa. If your replacement chain links do not have the same shape or look as the chain you removed, don't use it, get one that looks the same and has the same number of plates (& links of course).

Thanks I noticed the plates yesterday before I installed it were less but he chain fit fine and looked the same shape. I did move the sled out of the garage and around the block with no issues. and it rode smooth. maybe I should take it back out and replace it before using it again.
 
are the silent 13 plate and 15 plates interchangeable ? or are neither of the 3 different chain types compatible ?I know the HYVO isn't for sure.
 
I would get the correct chain, or get the gears to match the chain and also verify if different gear spacers are needed.
I've never tried to mix 13 and 15 plate, if you had a wider chain that broke, I wonder if it had been replaced at some time in the past, as your sled calls for a 13 plate setup (at least for USA sleds) unless you have a 99 SRX which is 15 plate. Did the new chain seem too narrow for the gears?

I don't think you can put a 13 plate chain on 15 plate gears, don't the outer plates overhang the gear teeth to keep the chain saddled to the gear?
