1997 sx700 low idle , bogging, and now different exhaust tone

I just cant seem to catch a break with this sled.. Just constant frustration and issues.. A local shop did a carb cleaning, and they said the sled ran fine.. well I get it home and its not even close to fine..


It is now bogging, tors was engaging, and something just doesnt feel right.. In the morning when I start it up, it barely idles.. maybe around 500 rpm, once warm it gets better , but still is off and on.. Just got back from a 10 minute ride down the trail and heres the problem

Low idle - but its not consistent .. Sometime it idles fine @ 1500 or so , and others its barely going

Weird noises coming from clutch

When I first try to move it after its warmed up its just boggy and just feels stiff.. Im giving it like 3/4 throttle to even move.. When its warm its fine, but a pita when cold

Low end extremely boggy, even when warmed up to temp , midrange feels ok

and the most concerning to me ... When giving throttle, it has a tone that I cant really describe.. compared to how the 700 tripp should sound, it sounds boggy, like something is plugged, and doesnt have that typical rapp tone, it sounds muffled , like maybe the clutch is bad, or the exhaust is plugged.. Its hard to explain like I said but very concerning, becaus emy viper made the same sounds, exhaust tone before the center bearing locked up

Is that in the carbs? or the cdi?


I just talked to them, and they said to bring it back.. The tech who worked on it said there was so much black "stuff" in the tank that the carbs may have got plugged again and that they would like to reclean the carbs, and put a new filter in the tank... Figures , another $25 in gas thats gotta get syphoned out and charged $15 to get thrown away

If they found black stuff in the carbs and tank, then your pilot jets are most definitely clogged. They prob cleaned them good, that old black stuff is prob making its way back in.

The pilot jets are in the carbs and are notorious for clogging up, especially if there's any residue in them. In this case, it sounds like u had lots of black residue.
 
Hold on now, what is this black stuff in the tank, and is the tank filter not able to keep it out of the rest of the fuel system (apparently not)?
If this bunch of black stuff, even if a little bit, is making it's way to the carbs, why did the dealer not address getting the tank and fuel system cleaned out before putting freshly cleaned carbs back on. That makes no sense, something sounds amiss here, they should have at least contacted you with what they found and recommended a course of action to at least clean the tank and install a good new filter. What a waste of time to not address it, sorry for a bit of a rant here.

That said, quite honestly it's not uncommon for gas tanks to have a little something hanging around at the bottom, especially with all the years of filling up and the ethanol gas of today, but the filter should keep the junk in the tank only, and not in the fuel lines or carbs.

On another note, if I were you I'd save the $25 & $15 that you mention and siphon out the gas myself or with a buddy, filter it and let the junk settle out, then run the gas in the mower or car/truck.

Sorry I forgot to mention.. they did a fuel system flush, and syphoned the tank.. BEFORE they did the carbs.. When I picked it up it ran fine.. But now about a week and 100 miles later its bogging.. It almost feels like something is plugged, or the clutch ( which is going out ) is holding the sled back

I just called them a little while ago, and he said the tech noticed alot of black residue in the tank .. So I have to trailer it back into town once again so they can make it right, for the first time... Any tutorials on here how to fully flush the fuel system, clean the tank etc? Im not sure whats going on, or why , But next time I will make a 2 hour round trip to hauck in rice lake, and have it done right, including a new primary and kit.. :(

I know it sounds to simple to be true, but your discription sounds like u might have fowled plugs. Have u tried new ones. Just throwing that out there.
 
New plugs were put in after the fuelsystem and carb cleaning.. ngk br9es


Is there a better , or iridium plug I could try?

At this moment Im just gonna have them tear it apart again.. Should be free for the most part..

I also have a new set of NGK caps that I will have them throw on.. The originals are still on there , so just as preventative , Ill just have those on too...

You said that it ran well for about a week. The plugs may be fowling a bit now if it's running a but rich or driven too lightly. Maybe check the plugs before having to bring it back all the way in to the dealer?

Brought it back in. They are gonna go thru the carbs the gas tank change the tank filter add a inline filter clean and re sync the carbs for free. Anything beyond that they will let me know. Mouse nest in the ehhaust came up, rechecking the needles and air screws makes sense if nothing else fixes it. Gonna check the primary to make sure its ok... Its swueeking and rattling , and sometimes I smell burnt rubber.

Dumb question. But I need new exhaust donuts. The one off the manifold and the one by the can as mine are literally gone.. Non existent. Would that cause any weird issues?

Im not sure if those gaskets would cause a massive issue. I'm sure that's not the problem though, considering that it ran great for a week of riding. Changing/checking the plugs probably would of been the best thing to start with. The carb issue is also a good possibility of the problem. Either way, you prob should get those exhaust gaskets, regardless of them being the problem or not.
 
you need some mechanically inclined buddies. I cant imagine spending all that money on a simple carb cleaning.
 
and if its coming on and off like you say Im feeling that this is most likely not a carb issue but an electrical. Not seeing the sled run and looking at it myself I cant give a definite answer but I was having similar issues with my 97 last year because of bad coils. Ive also heard about some people having stator issues. is the clutch sound you hear the same as in the beginning of this video? like a Metallic rattle/ting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmeH93eHBkQ

X2 - all that srx700c wrote.

IMO - Given the aggitation of fuel in the tank keeping it clean, you would have to have cup fulls of debris in a tank of only a gallon or two fuel to plug a filter in the tank enough to cause fuel delivery issues.

I will say that the filter in the tank is more course than the inlet seat screens... which is finer than then the pilot holes.
 
Well they have had it for a few days now. They made sure the gas and carbs were good , and checked a bunch of other things. Took it for a ride and it did to them what it did to me. Run fine for a bit. But then would just fall on its face. It had the feeling that something was holding The sled back , something plugged etc. Its really weird. Compression and leakdown are still good, carbs clean, good 93 fuel, good spark new plugs ( BTW the plugs looked perfect when they took them out )

So I'm lost and so are they. I just have a feeling its the clutch. It squeeks and probably should be replaced and I noticed that a few times it acted up I smelt burnt rubber.

The tone of the motor sounds different when it acts up.. Like a low boggy tone. And feels like the e brake is on and the thing just won't move.

Any suggestions guys, please help!! This thing has 40 miles on the trail this season and 47 miles on the trailer. What a waste to a perfect riding season. Good temps and a ton ( 3+ feet ) of snow since late November and yet here I am , almost new years and this thing is just pissing me off

Yes, it won't run well like that. but it sounds like you have other issues. intermittent things like that are often electrical. maybe a harness rub thru

Any particular place the harness will rub? Also could it be a weak/bad stator? Would the clutch cause weird symptoms like that?
 
Sure the clutch could too. As far as the burning rubber smell there's 3 things that could cause that. the belt, if it was that bad I'd think you'd see black marks on the sheaves. Wires burning. Or the track rubbing on something. SRX's and Vipers have some common rub thru spots but i'm not sure with the redheads. try a search or maybe some other redhead owners can post.
 
Under the engine is the only spot I have come into contact with a rub through on my sx. I had a problem with my secondary a couple years ago the bushing and slides were wore out and would not shift properly and cause some boggy conditions. Could also be a bearing for the jackshaft or driveshaft getting hot and starting to sieze.
