02 Viper 85 MPH Top End?? 8500RPM! Is this normal top speed for this sled??

Hi,
I bought this used 02 Viper. It has 5000 Miles on it. It has been well cared for. The guy I bought it from Kept a 3 ring binder Journal of everything he did to it. He is a very anal person! Any ways I looked through all the tech FAQ's and Turks pages and cant seem to find what I need. My sled is Quite snappy and has a strong mid range. I holds 8500 Rpm WOT all day long. But I am only getting 85-87 mph on speedo on hard pack railroad grade.
I have checked the plugs and all three are golden brown. Belt width is well within spec. Belt deflection is set to -.01 below Sheeve. Track tightness is within spec.

This sled has had several mods done to it, No doubt with help from TY!
Tempa flow
Heel clicker clutch kit 3.3 in heel and 3.3 plus one extra washer in tip. Red Primary spring. Looks to have a black with purple dot sec spring
M10 suspension
23 tooth top gear
1-1/4 Ice ripper track No studs
Opticool Head gasket
Bender can
Boyesen reeds with spacers
SRX Heat Exchanger
Bender Torque arm
Only Yamahlube Semi syn oil used


I have only owned Ski doos so this is my first time with a yamaha.
 
love a easy post like this. three things. 1. i would check compression just for peace of mind 2. m-10 suspension. huge speed robber. 3. service and clean power valves 3:16 (YAMMIE TONY)

Thanks for replies! In his notes He just has the top gear changed to a 23 Tooth. Is there an easy way to check to see if Pv's move freeley or do I have to take it apart? Also Should I check compression cold or warmed up? lots of opinions on this

Also What compression numbers should I be seeing?
 
8500rpm tells me the powervalves are open. I dont know if they are adjusted right but they are open or it would be lower rpm.

I think I would check the chaincase gearing to know exactly whats in there top and bottom.

Then see what helix it has in it, the clutch set up is not how i would set up a viper by the weights, but thats easy enough to change but need more info on the helix and sec spring.(twist,etc)

I will agree that the m10 suspension tied to a 1 1/4' track is going to zap some speed out of it for sure but it should be able to "show" you a 100mph on the speedo if its set up right.
 
Ok after checking out my sled here is what I found.
Gearing 23/38
9 tooth drivers
8bv71 (47deg) helix
Spring at 6-2 80 deg.
Sec spring Black with a pink dot
Compression: Pto 112, 135, 135 (checked cold with throttle open 28 degrees)
 
secondary is more than likely a red even though it looks pink. There is a pink secondary spring from one of the older sleds but it is clocked different so you have to wind them differently to use them in these clutches and it's not very common. PTO will have less compression than the others if the head is stock but that seems like a bigger spread than what is usually posted. Probably need a helix change and weights loaded differently but that's not my department. I'd probably also go to the stock 22 top gear. I know it seems opposite what you're looking for but it will make things more efficient.

well.... a straight 47 with heel clikers is "yuck" in my book, never got one to run good with that steep of a finish angle. rest of sled looks to check out except the clutching.

a better responding set up would be 5 grams heel weight, 3.4 middle,4.3 tip, red primary, stock red dot sec spring and a 48/34 or 48/36 helix, wind the sec spring to 80.

the stock 22/38 viper gearing is a little more peppy also, and would help the m10 bigger track set up some.
 
where the he11 do you buy a 48/36 or 48/34 helix for these? bender is the only place I come up with for $129.00
 
I like the dalton helix's the best,They shift really smooth and seem to be pretty consistant but theres all kinds of places to buy aftermarket helix.
Micro Belmont in michigan, Pioneer Performance in new york, Hauck powersports. Youd just need to check on the angles, most places are $85-$100 price range.
 
Can you get your mph using a GPS? Just toss it in your pocket with it recording and take a run. You can then check top speed after the run. One thing that some guys did to get a more accurate speedo reading was to grind a gear off the speedo pickup wheel. This would drop the speedo mph by about 10%. All good advice above, not disagreeing with any of it, but it just doesn't seem like you are fully shifting out if you are pulling 8500 and only getting 85 on the speedo. I realize I am probably stating the obvious to experienced clutched tuners. You might try marking each clutch face with a permanent marker to see what is happening with full shift. I have seen silly things like stuck or damaged secondary bushings keep the clutches from shifting out.

For a reference point my stock 02 Viper would regularly show 120+ mph on the speedo in optimum conditions. Real speed was around 100.

You could also simply check your speedo pickup gear with a light and a mirror. Just look under your secondary clutch. Or use your cell phone and and take a pic.
 
Ding. I checked speedo gear and all teeth are there. My 48/36 came in the mail yesterday still waiting on the heel clicker weights. I will put in the 48/36 helix and report back. Goin for a ride today
