I'll be the first to admit I'm a rookie at carb's. I put in a larger main jet in the one side (either mag or pto, can't remember right now) when I put on my psi twin pipes. It's a 96 600 xt. I have a bog right now so I'll check mid-range to make sure I'm ok. If I'm not, I'll have to adjust the needles. I don't have clue where the needles are and how to get them out. I also made an adjustment ot the fuel screws. I basically adjusted the only screws that weren't there to hold the carb togehter. Did I do this right? I know, I'm an idiot.
Sled idles good, has good top end (over 6k) but between 4k and 6k is a little sluggish.

Looks like you need to drop your needle slightly, ...pull of the carb cover, clamp down the throttle lever and remove the allen srews from the top of the slider, ...needle will pull right up (don't forget to remove the airbox), ...move the clip up one or throw in a couple of washers. I have my 96' leaned out as well and I noticed the mag side running a little leaner than the pto side, ...I'm considering fattening up the mag main one size as well, ...little risky on those cold days.

There is a good how to in the tech section. I think it is in the engine link, I will check and edit this post. Maxdlx
It is in the tech section, engine section under heading setting carb needles. It explains it pretty well. Maxdlx

i know this sounds really rookie, but I'm still lost.
ok, I pull the airbox, not a problem. I pull the carbs off the boots. Again not a problem. Where is the needle? I know to get to the mains you turn the carbs over and take out the cover/retaining bolt, but where are the needles?
And by lowering, do I put the clip in a lower number position?

The needles are under the top slide cover. You need to remove it to get to the needles. Maxdlx call me if you want 563-893-2245

If I look at the carb diagram correctly for the 96 600xt from the yamaha site, it looks like I need to get to #4. Do I have to take the carbs off to get to it? It looks like it's right on top. Do I have to take the carbs apart to get into it? And how does the numbering system work? Higher number is that richer or leaner?

When is a good time to call you? I talked to Maxx Perf and he told me to expect a little bog in the mid-range with that pipe. He said I probably am a little lean and should raise the needle 1/2 if I see that I am lean. That means I still need to tear into the carbs.

higher number clip setting (lower on the needle itself) = more fuel = richer

Ball end screwdriver. Maximum performance sells them. Worth the $$.

Yup, SpartaSRX did my needles last week. finally got to run it last night up at his place. What a difference! No more of that bog or "burble" in the low to midrange. Lot's more punch... much less hesitation when you can it from say 30 mph... before it would cough and wait and then go...
Oh, and it sounds better too.... without that "burble" in the way... I was impressed with how much difference a small change like this made. Didn't help me avoid running over the dead deer in the field, but oh well!!
Thanks Pat!!

Like he said, you want a fairly long (say 6-8") ball end screw driver to get the needles out. The two small black screws are socket heads.... not sure of the size, but they are small... and metric!!

For some reason, 4mm hex sticks in my mind for the screws. A long driver or allen wrench is a must. Be careful with the spacers. If you drop one in the engine compartment as I did, it will never be found.

they are 2.5mm allen head screws
