Wisconsin guy here. Just picked up a vmax sx 700. 4700k rocket roller? secondary clutch, appears to have aftermarket pipe as well. its nickel plated but a bit rusty. new track, and also appears to have new head gaskets. don't know much history on it as it was a trade. shocks front and rear are gone, have a set coming from someone off here (THANKS !) But im curious as to what year this might be? was told 99 but not sure. registered it as a 99 and had no flags. What do you all think? Thanks in advance!
 
97/98. 99 they were blue, if I recall correctly. Steel skis are a good indicator as well. Junk them and get some aftermarket skis. Those steelies won't turn worth a darn. If you post the tunnel no. we can tell you for sure.

yep that's a 1997 sx , you can have those shocks rebuilt uknow, there s a lot you can do to those sleds to make them so much more
 
Thanks for the info! I just received some shocks from member srx700c! thanks again! And I just got home from buying a set of nitro skis and carbides for $85! So hopefully I should be rippin shortly!

As for having rebuildables, I talked to local Yamaha shop, they told me I was out of luck.
 
Well I guess ill get em rebuilt and have some spares!! thanks for the info! Cant wait to get the Nytro skis on, should handle a bit better.
 
are you sure it has a new gasket (engine opened for some reason) at only 4700km? Youve got yourself one of the best sleds ever made by the way. Check out the tech section for a bunch of free mods and tips!
 
not 100% sure but it looks pretty fresh. That was an assumption by me. runs great has awesome midrange. once the shocks are on ill be able to fully see what it will do.
 
I've owned 2 97 vmax 700s, one of which is my current sled. My last one had over 11000 miles on an unopened engine, still ran like new. Truly one of the most, if not the most dependable snowmobiles you can buy, if taken care of properly. I've put a Polaris Xtra-10 skid in all the Yamahas I've owned, one of the best improvements that I made, JMHO.

Well shocks are in and nitro skis are on! definitely a world of difference. but heres a few pics for you guys. mainly about the front shock on my skid. this is what came OUT of it. Definitely not stock or even a snowmobile shock. took us two hours to get it out.unnameddfd.jpg

You're gonna love that machine.

Only thing that you should watch for if it is a 97 instead of a 98 is the crank seals. I believe the block was mildly redesigned for 98 because of some issues in the 97s.

On an unrelated note, do you think that the DNR could have come up with an uglier color for our stickers this year??? :dunno:

I've never heard anything about the crank seals on the 97's but they did upgrade the outer crank bearings from 2 ball bearings on each end to one large roller bearing, supposed to be stronger. Those JD green stickers are freakin ugly!! lol.
 
That shock (red one) appears to out of an atv.....as much tension as they had on that thing I cant even begin to figure out how they got it in there. we cut it. The stickers are ugly......wasn't gonna put em there but did.
 
ahaha! i really want to know who had that old shock painted everything (even shaft) red and jammed it under there... kinda makes you wonder what else is jerry rigged up/abused on the sled???
 
well I looked EVERYTHING over, and it seems that was the only thing joe dirt was allowed to do. thank god.
